Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman revealed the message he gave his agents after the Atlanta Braves acquired Oakland Athletics first baseman Matt Olson during the 2021-22 offseason.
Freeman, who hails from Southern California, had only one destination in mind following the Braves’ move for the A’s’ All-Star: “Get me home.”
“The Dodgers were in touch all along, and they understood an abject bargain awaited once the main competition was eliminated,” wrote The New York Post’s Jon Heyman. “One exec called it ‘crazy’ talks fizzled with his first choice. ‘It worked out well for everyone,’ Freeman recalled, meaning Olson, since he’s home, too.”
Freeman has proven himself as one of the Dodgers’ best pieces of business over the past several seasons, making the All-Star Game in every season since arriving back in LA. Through his four seasons, he has batted .310 and hit 94 home runs, posting a .907 OPS through his 614 games in Dodger blue.
He won his first World Series with Atlanta in 2021, and followed it up with another win in 2024, for which he was a key piece. Freeman won the World Series MVP last season, batting .300 with four home runs and 12 RBIs through the Dodgers’ five games against the New York Yankees.
Freeman is the current active leader in runs, hits and RBIs, and clearly still has plenty of juice left in the tank at 36. The Dodgers still have him under contract through the 2027 season.
The future Hall of Famer has featured in all 10 of the Dodgers’ postseason games this season, and is looking to play an important role in their upcoming World Series matchup against either the Seattle Mariners or Toronto Blue Jays. The biggest series of the season is set to begin on Friday, Oct. 24.
