Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman responded to critical comments Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez made about Aaron Boone

After another failed postseason run, there are a lot of questions that the New York Yankees have to answer this offseason. Every season seems to be the same story, as the team has continued to struggle to find a way to take advantage of superstar slugger Aaron Judge’s absurd production, leading to rumors swirling around manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman‘s respective futures with the team.

The calls for Boone’s head have only increased after this latest postseason defeat, with former players like Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez even chiming in on the matter. After both guys made critical comments about Boone, Cashman stepped in and blasted both of them for speaking on a situation they know nothing about.

Since taking over as the Yankees’ manager in 2018, the story with Boone has largely been the same every year. New York can win at will in the regular season, but once it comes to the playoffs, the team cannot find a way to get over the hump. In 2024, New York finally found a way to make it to the World Series for the first time under Boone’s lead, but they quickly lost in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 2025 campaign was much of the same. The Yanks finished with an identical record as last season, but they quickly bowed out in the ALDS after losing to the Toronto Blue Jays in four games. In the team’s brief playoff run, Boone’s decision-making was once again questionable at best, and his seat felt scorching hot.

New York has never seemed truly interested in moving on from Boone, despite the outside chatter surrounding him. That now includes recent comments from Jeter and Rodriguez suggesting that the front office is making in-game decisions, not Boone. When asked about those comments, Cashman quickly shot them down and took aim at the two Yankees legends.

“It’s not true. Clearly, they don’t know,” Cashman said on WFAN Sports Radio in response to the rumors surrounding Boone that Jeter and Rodriguez helped stir up. “I think that’s the bugaboo that people get to throw out there when they’ve got nothing else to throw … We’ve never picked the lineup, we don’t tell him who to play, we don’t tell him who to pitch, whether it’s the pen or rotation … It’s just a sad, sad throwaway comment for people to make that don’t really know.”

Should the Yankees Fire Aaron Boone?

At some point, something has to change in New York. The team and its fans want World Series championships, but to this point, Boone has been unable to deliver. Some of it is due to the construction of the team’s roster, but Boone also hasn’t helped himself with questionable decisions that get put under an even brighter light with each passing season.

Regardless of how committed to Boone the Yankees are, it’s clear that time is running out for him to lead his squad to this promised land. Judge isn’t getting any younger, and every season they fail to win it all with him leading the way is a missed opportunity. For now, it seems Boone is safe, but the question of whether or not he should have a job seems set to be heavily debated once again over the coming months.
