The Kansas City Chiefs are doing some old-fashioned soul-searching after starting the season with back-to-back losses.<\/p>\n

And perhaps the most striking thing is that it has been the offense that feels to have been struggling the most, and against the Philadelphia Eagles, Patrick Mahomes was a one-man show.<\/p>\n

Which we know isn’t a sustainable model in the NFL.<\/p>\n

Part of the reason for Patrick to put the cape on is that receivers weren’t getting open routinely, and the run game was nonexistent, with Kareem Hunt the best of the running backs with just 31 yards from eight carries, with Mahomes being the best “rusher” on the day. So, Patrick wasn’t getting any help.<\/p>\n

For Nate Taylor of ESPN, one of his biggest takeaways was that Mahomes had to play God for his team to even be in the game.<\/p>\n

“After halftime, Reid and Nagy didn’t find substantive solutions to help Mahomes,” Taylor wrote. “Too often, Mahomes had to be a superhero to give the Chiefs a chance for success.”<\/p>\n

Can Chiefs stay afloat with reinforcements on the horizon?<\/h2>\n

In short, they have to, right?<\/p>\n

We aren’t sure if Xavier Worthy will suit up against the New York Giants, while Rashee Rice is still serving his six-game suspension for an off-the-field incident.<\/p>\n

After the Giants, the Chiefs play the Baltimore Ravens, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and then the Detroit Lions. It isn’t out of the realm of possibility that the Chiefs are 2-4 after that stretch, in which case their season would be on life support when Rice comes back.<\/p>\n

The fact that Kansas City was in a position to still win the game against the Eagles will give the coaching staff hope, but they must figure out how to not have Mahomes play hero ball just for the offense to function.<\/p>\n

Because, as great as Patrick is, that isn’t sustainable for 17 weeks.<\/p>\n
