Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu gave a positive update on a potential return from his calf injury.<\/p>\n

Abreu has been on the injured list since Aug. 19 with a calf strain. As he approaches a full month out, the outfielder is closing in on a return to game action.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know. Soon. Waiting for the trainers to let me play,\u201d Abreu said. \u201cMaybe next week. I don\u2019t know\u2026 I\u2019ve been hitting. I\u2019ve been doing everything. I don\u2019t feel anything when I hit. The progressing of running has been very good.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Triple-A Worcester\u2019s season ending Sept. 21, Abreu\u2019s time for a rehab assignment is nearly over. He\u2019s hopeful he will be able to get into games very soon.<\/p>\n

Although Abreu is hopeful to return soon, he admits it has been frustrating not being able to play, as he didn\u2019t expect the injury to be this serious.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took a lot longer. I thought it wasn\u2019t a big deal. But I\u2019m focused on being healthy and 100 percent next week and the rest of the season,\u201d Abreu said. \u201cIt\u2019s very tough to not play and help the team. Waiting to be healthy and 100 percent so I can play the last couple of games and potentially the playoffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red Sox manager Alex Cora, meanwhile, says he\u2019s hopeful Abreu will be activated next week. However, it\u2019s unclear if that\u2019s targeting the A\u2019s or Rays series, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.<\/p>\n

Abreu is hitting .253 with 22 home runs and 69 RBIs this season. The Red Sox are currently tied 81-68 and holding onto a wild card spot.<\/p>\n
