PHILADELPHIA — Kyle Schwarber hit four home runs in one game last month that put the Philadelphia Phillies slugger on the precipice of 50 home runs this season.<\/p>\n

Then he waited. And waited some more.<\/p>\n

Schwarber’s home run drought — as much as the designated hitter could really have one this year — spanned 10 games and 49 plate appearances as he chased the milestone.<\/p>\n

Schwarber reached 50 home runs in a season for the first time when he hit a three-run shot off reliever Justin Hagenman in the seventh inning of a 9-3 victory over the New York Mets.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know what to say about why have you hit so many homers or whatever it is,” Schwarber said. “It’s just the way it happens. It’s not like I go up there trying to do that. It just finds its way. It’s a cool thing.”<\/p>\n

Schwarber joined 2008 World Series champion Ryan Howard as the only Phillies players to reach 50 home runs in a season. Howard hit 58 in 2006.<\/p>\n

Schwarber is the first player in big league history with a four-homer game and 50 home runs in the same season. His power stalled after he became the 21st major leaguer and fourth Phillies player to hit four homers in a game on Aug. 28 against Atlanta.<\/p>\n

“I went through a little bit of a rough patch,” Schwarber said. “I felt like over the last four or five days, I was having some really good, quality at-bats. Hitting some balls hard. There’s not anything you can do to worry about that.”<\/p>\n

Schwarber’s home run hit just under the pitch clock in straightaway center field and gave the Phillies a 7-1 lead as he became the first National League player to reach 50 this season. Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh leads the majors with 53 home runs.<\/p>\n

NATONALS 7, MARLINS 5 Josh Bell homered for the fourth time in three games, Mitchell Parker threw 7 2\/3 innings of two-run ball and visiting Washington beat Miami. Parker (8-15) retired 14 consecutive batters after allowing Joey Wiemer’s solo home run in the second. The left-hander allowed 4 hits, struck out 2 and walked 2. Rookie Daylen Lile also went deep while CJ Abrams and James Wood doubled and singled each for the Nationals.<\/p>\n

CUBS 6, BRAVES 1 Rookie Cade Horton threw 6 1\/3 strong innings, Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in two runs and Chicago pulled away from host Atlanta. Horton (10-4), a leading candidate for National League Rookie of the Year, allowed one run on four hits with no walks. Crow-Armstrong went 1 for 2, walked, was hit by a pitch and had two steals.<\/p>\n

INTERLEAGUE<\/p>\n

ORIOLES 3, PIRATES 2 (11) Samuel Basallo hit an RBI single in the 11th inning that was initially ruled a foul ball to give host Baltimore a victory over Pittsburgh. Basallo’s popup to left grazed off the glove of left fielder Tommy Pham, landed on the chalk in the outfield grass, and was ruled foul. After a review, it was ruled a hit to drive in Gunnar Henderson for the Orioles’ third consecutive walk-off victory.<\/p>\n

RANGERS 5, BREWERS 4 Michael Helman’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning tied the game at 3-3, which Wyatt Langford broke with and RBI triple to center field later in the inning, as host Texas held off Milwaukee. Langord scored on Kyle Higashioka’s double to give Texas a 5-3 lead. Jake Bauers hit a solo home run — his seventh of the season — to center field in the ninth for Milwaukee. Christian Yelich had an RBI single and William Contreras added a two-run double for the Brewers.<\/p>\n

AMERICAN LEAGUE<\/p>\n

GUARDIANS 2, ROYALS 0 Joey Cantillo allowed four hits in a career-best eight-plus innings, Jos\u00e9 Ram\u00edrez homered, doubled and scored twice, and host Cleveland beat Kansas City for its fifth consecutive victory. Cantillo (5-3) struck out five and didn’t issue a walk. Ram\u00edrez, who had three hits, hit a solo home run off Royals starter Noah Cameron (7-6) with two outs in the first. David Fry hit the second of back-to-back to doubles to drive in Ram\u00edrez in the fourth. Cameron (University of Central Arkansas) gave up 2 runs on 6 hits with 8 strikeouts in 7 innings.<\/p>\n

TIGERS 12, YANKEES 2 Parker Meadows hit a go-ahead single to spark a nine-run seventh inning and Kerry Carpenter added a two-run triple as visiting Detroit took advantage of wild relievers Fernando Cruz and Mark Leiter Jr. in a victory over New York. Detroit sent 14 batters to the plate in the seventh and the first nine reached against Cruz (2-4) and Leiter, who combined to allow four walks, four hits and a hit batsman.<\/p>\n

BLUE JAYS 4, ASTROS 3 (10) Tyler Heineman drove in the winning run in the 10th inning and host Toronto rallied to defeat Houston. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached on an infield single against Craig Kimbrel (0-1) to begin the 10th, advancing automatic runner Myles Straw to third base. Daulton Varsho struck out and Heineman followed with a fielder’s choice grounder to first base, where a diving Christian Walker couldn’t throw home in time to retire the speedy Straw.<\/p>\n

RAYS 5, WHITE SOX 4 Tristan Gray, Josh Lowe and Richie Palacios homered to help visiting Tampa Bay outlast Chicago. Gray hit a tiebreaking solo drive off Tyler Alexander (5-14) in the seventh inning. It was Gray’s third home run in 17 games since he was acquired in a July 26 trade with the White Sox for cash. Tampa Bay earned its 11th win in 16 games.<\/p>\n
