At age 13, this sweet-natured senior dog named Bruiser has just about seen it all. He\u2019s pretty well set on what he likes \u2014 and one of those is having a predictable routine.<\/p>\n

\u201cBruiser is stubborn and doesn’t like change,\u201d Nicole Michell, the dog\u2019s loving owner, told The Dodo.<\/p>\n

But the other day, Bruiser\u2019s stubbornness led him astray.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Last week, Nicole and her boyfriend took a trip out of town and asked a friend to stay the night to keep Bruiser company at their home in Upstate New York.<\/p>\n

The couple was having a new deck built out back, where Bruiser normally does his business, so Nicole suggested the pet sitter take him to the front to use the bathroom.<\/p>\n

Bruiser, however, did not approve of this change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t go out the front door,\u201d Nicole said. \u201cSo she hooked him up on a lead and brought him out back.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were several deep holes out back where the deck\u2019s footings were to be installed, so the pet sitter did her best to steer Bruiser away from them. But the old dog wasn\u2019t pleased to not have his usual free rein.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, he is very stubborn and weighs almost 100 pounds,\u201d Nicole said. \u201cHe pulled the opposite way, and his back foot slipped, and in the hole he went.\u201d<\/p>\n

Plop.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bruiser was stuck, plugging the hole like a cork in a bottle with his chubby body. The pet sitter couldn\u2019t get him out.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur friend called up immediately,\u201d Nicole said. \u201cWe called to get other people up to the house to help her. He was wedged in pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, local animal control and members of the Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company were on the scene to help.<\/p>\n

For Bruiser, regrettably, this too was far from routine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fortunately, after widening the hole enough to get a good grip on him, rescuers were eventually able to lift Bruiser out to safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the moment he fell in to the moment he got out, it was a little less than an hour and a half,\u201d Nicole said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After learning about Bruiser\u2019s accident, Nicole and her boyfriend cut their trip short and rushed home.<\/p>\n

But despite having taken a tumble, Bruiser was completely unscathed after his little ordeal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was 100% fine, just dirty. Not a limp,\u201d Nicole said. \u201cWe got home about two hours later, and he acted like nothing even happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bruiser doesn\u2019t seem to be holding it against anyone for putting those holes \u2014 which are now safely covered \u2014 out back where he does his business. His family, meanwhile, is just thankful things resolved as they did.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were so grateful [for everyone who helped]!\u201d Nicole said. \u201cSome volunteer firefighters even contacted me the next day to see how Bruiser was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
