Now here\u2019s some news worth cheering for.<\/p>\n

Following the premiere of Netflix\u2019s America\u2019s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders<\/em> in June, the docuseries is officially set to return for a second season in 2025, the streaming service announced Nov. 11.<\/p>\n

In a teaser for season two, members of the NFL cheer squad\u2014clad in their signature blue and white uniforms paired with their iconic cowboy boots\u2014performed a sultry dance routine before uniting in a huddle as they ditched their pom-poms, chanting, \u201cDCC season two! Woo!\u201d<\/p>\n

Much like season one, viewers will continue to get unfiltered behind-the-scenes access to the Dallas Cowboys\u2019 cheerleading team as the series documents all the highs and lows of the 2024-2025 football season, beginning with the team\u2019s auditions and training camp.<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s first season followed the formation of the team\u2019s 36-person team, which included legacy cheerleaders Victoria Kalina<\/strong> and Madeline Salter<\/strong>\u2014whose mothers were also DCC members\u2014as well as rookies like Anna Kate Sundvold<\/strong> and Reece Weaver<\/strong>, who went on to make the cut once more for the team\u2019s 2024 season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

One fan who will no doubt celebrate the renewal is Chrissy Teigen<\/strong>, who donned a lookalike Cowboys cheerleader outfit as she filmed a parody audition shared on her Instagram page in August.<\/p>\n

\u201cAside from this, I\u2019m actually working as an archaeologist just west of the Nile River,\u201d she joked in a nod to the cheerleaders\u2019 many professional roles. \u201cI actually solo discovered the last triceratops that was found\u2014but this is, hands down, my priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Chrissy\u2014who shares kids\u00a0Luna<\/strong>, 8,\u00a0Miles<\/strong>, 6,\u00a0Esti<\/strong>, 21 months, and\u00a0Wren<\/strong>, 16 months, with husband John Legend<\/strong>\u2014even got her eldest daughter in on the action, proving that comedic timing runs in the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my first year auditioning,\u201d Luna joked as the video cut to her pretending to warm up alongside her mom. \u201cI don\u2019t know, the competition isn\u2019t really that tough.\u201d<\/p>\n

The video earned high marks from the team\u2019s head choreographer, Judy Trammell<\/strong>, who commented, \u201cLuna is great!!!!! You too Chrissy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Jump Splits Look Painful Because They Are<\/p>\n

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’ signature jump splits take their toll, according to alum Caroline Sundvold<\/strong>, who appeared in the Netflix docuseries\u00a0American Sweethearts<\/em> with her younger sister and DCC hopeful Anna Kate Sundvold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A doctor told Caroline she needed surgery following four seasons of jump-splitting her joints into a permanently injured state, as she shared on the show, “but a hip surgery like that is a good three to six months recovery. I was like, \u2018I really want to do one more year of cheerleading.\u2019 I just wanted to push through.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

She finally had the operation after her fifth season, Caroline noting that the sacrifice was totally worth it. But the foot surgery she underwent next was surprisingly more traumatic.<\/p>\n

“You would think hip surgery would be a little worse,” Caroline said. “But the foot has so many nerves in it. So from the [end-of-season] banquet until now I\u2019ve just been recovering a lot, which has been a bit of a wake-up call.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

America’s Sweetheart<\/em> standout Madeline Salter<\/strong>, who will be returning for the 2024 NFL season, has documented more treatment sessions on her Instagram than most, including visits to Kinetic Centre, a spine and sports rehab clinic, to vanquish tension headaches and get her feet taped.<\/p>\n

Her chiropractic sports practitioner Dr. Kristina Myles<\/strong> noted in a post showing Salter getting worked on, “our focus is primarily correcting facial layers that can cause pain, stiffness, or loss of range of motion when injured or overworked.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are always ready for some football, but the gig of a lifetime is also not the main event as far as income goes.<\/p>\n

ESPN reported in 2017 that NFL team cheerleaders made roughly $75 to $150 per game, an eye-opening moment for fans who assumed those glamorous performers were making bank. Or at least a living wage.<\/p>\n

As seen in America’s Sweethearts<\/em>, now former DCC\u00a0Kelcey Wetterberg <\/strong>is a pediatric registered nurse, while then-newcomer Reece Allman\u00a0<\/strong>(n\u00e9e Weaver), who’ll be back for the 2024 season, works at a Dallas florist to supplement her earnings from cheerleading.<\/p>\n

According to the Dallas Morning News, cheerleader pay has since risen to closer to $400 per game, plus hourly wages for all the time spent\u00a0preparing\u00a0<\/em>for games and making appearances.<\/p>\n

Still, DCC alum Kat Puryear<\/strong> said on the Netflix show, “I would say I’m making, like, a substitute teacher [salary]…I would say I’m making, like, Chick-fil-A worker that works full-time” money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Megan McElaney<\/strong>, returning for a fourth season in 2024, gave a video-montage glimpse of her typical day as “an NFL cheerleader with three jobs,” starting with her 6:15 a.m. wakeup call.<\/p>\n

In addition to her full-time job as a marketing\/recruiting coordinator at Bluecrest Financial Alliances, per LinkedIn, she has added makeup artist for The Styling Stewardess to her resume\u2014and when all that work is done, it’s off to AT&T Stadium for evening practice, which ends at 11 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Maintaining peak fitness is part of the gig, but custom uniforms tailored for each cheerleader’s shape have helped the organization move past a more body-image-obsessed era.<\/p>\n

“Trying to make that uniform fit and and have the most beautiful lines, we don’t talk about weight,” DCC director since 1991 Kelli Finglass told E! News. “The girls are all very good with their own nutrition, their own personal workouts. We have a gym adjacent to our dance studio,” plus nutritionists and mental health experts available for consultation.<\/p>\n

The women are free to focus on their own personal regimens, “and we try to provide resources and educate them,” Finglass said. “We leave it at that. And I think we’re better for that.”<\/p>\n

The DCC audition FAQ section on their website advises, “You should look well-proportioned in dancewear.\u00a0We DO NOT have specific height and weight requirements.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

While the institution has certainly evolved over the years (the star-spangled uniforms didn’t even make their debut until 1972), the DCC organization isn’t all that different from when it began.<\/p>\n

“I think everything around<\/em> the cheerleaders has changed,” Finglass told the\u00a0New York Times. “And they\u2019re adapting to many things like social media and visibility. But at the core, they are world-class dancers, and a big part of what they do requires a servant\u2019s heart. That has been the case throughout our entire history.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

“They go to dinners with high-ranking military officials,” Finglass explained to the Times<\/em>, “so they are put in situations that they may not have been exposed to yet as an 18- or 19-year-old from a small town.”<\/p>\n

And since people get so excited to see the DCC all around the world, she continued, “I love them learning all the different facets and being polished and poised and prepared. All I\u2019m trying to do is give them every tool possible, so they can be confident.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

While they’re free to seek out assistance, and they have dedicated makeup artists for photo shoots, the ladies are responsible for doing their own hair and makeup before games. (Sophy Laufer<\/strong>, on the squad since 2022, has done a full tutorial on how she gets her glamorous game day glow on TikTok.)<\/p>\n

Among the aesthetic rules: No red lips and no red nails. Plus, hair must always be worn down, and Dallas’ Tangerine Salon has been keeping the ladies’ locks bouncy for years.<\/p>\n

Also, if you have a tattoo, fine\u2014but it has to be completely masked with makeup and bronzer for games.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The DCC are also pillars of their community, which choreographer Judy Trammell<\/strong> was happy to see reflected in America’s Sweethearts<\/em>.<\/p>\n

She lamented that their longrunning CMT reality show Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team<\/em>, which ended in 2022 after 16 seasons, “didn\u2019t show the things we do the rest of the year,” Trammell told Entertainment Tonight. “<\/em>The USO tours, the veterans hospital, the children\u2019s hospital visits. We do so much more than has ever been seen.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

There’s actually a squad to join\u00a0after\u00a0<\/em>you leave the team, Finglass told E! News, “a very active and engaging alumni association that’s called The Spirit of DCC.”<\/p>\n

Because not all that unlike getting out of the military, when someone retires from cheerleading it’s admittedly “a big<\/em> lifestyle change to go from seeing your teammates every night at rehearsals to not,” the DCC director explained. “That’s why we try to supplement that immediately<\/em> with alumni activities. Because it is sad for all of us.”<\/p>\n

Noting that the ladies go on to share major milestones\u2014such as weddings, and then their\u00a0kids<\/em>‘ weddings\u2014for years after their cheering days are done, Finglass added, “I feel like a school teacher, and when your students graduate, you’re always excited for the new freshman class. But of course you have emotions, and you have relationships that you know are not going to be seen or felt on a daily basis.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n
