The Boston Red Sox\u2019s season is closer to ending than you probably realize.<\/p>\n

Well, their regular season, anyway.<\/p>\n

Entering Sunday, only 38 games remained on Boston\u2019s schedule. And with the Red Sox by no means having locked in playoff positioning, the question remains: will Alex Cora\u2019s club take care of business over the next six weeks?<\/p>\n

To do so, the Red Sox will have to reverse a recent trend: their regular-season failures against the New York Yankees. USA Today\u2019s Bob Nightengale pointed out this conundrum.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf history repeats itself, the Red Sox could be in serious trouble making the postseason with seven games remaining against the Yankees,\u201d Nightengale wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Red Sox are 5-14 at Fenway Park (against the Yankees) and 4-20 at Yankee Stadium in August and September since the 2019 season. However, the Red Sox don\u2019t play another first-place team against until the final week of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boston closes its season with a three-game series at the Toronto Blue Jays, followed by a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers at home.<\/p>\n

Boston entered Sunday atop the American League Wild Card standings, tied with the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees sat 1.5 games behind both clubs in the third wild card spot. Lingering not far behind were the Cleveland Guardians (2.5 games back of the Yankees) and the Kansas City Royals (four games back).<\/p>\n

Boston was set to hand the ball to its ace, Garrett Crochet, in an afternoon matchup against the Miami Marlins. The Yankees, meanwhile, were preparing to send Will Warren to the mound to take on the St. Louis Cardinals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
