1911<\/strong>
\nEd Walsh <\/strong>pitched the 17th one-hitter in White Sox history, shutting out the Tigers, 2-0, at Comiskey Park. The one Detroit hit came in the sixth inning and was a near-miss, as catcher Oscar Stanage sent a ball back through the box that Walsh stopped, but missed Stanage by a step at first. Walsh faced just 29 batters in the game and improved to 20-13 with a 0.60 <\/em>ERA on the season.<\/p>\n

Also on this day, Charles Comiskey <\/strong>purchased Des Moines Boosters hurler Joe Benz<\/strong>, with the righty reporting to Chicago on August 15 and making his MLB debut the next day!<\/p>\n

Benz was a regular with the White Sox from 1912 to 1918, tallying 16.3 WAR over his career, all of which was spent on the South Side.<\/p>\n

1915<\/strong>
\nThe White Sox purchased the contract of pitcher Lefty Williams<\/strong> from Salt Lake City of the Pacific Coast League. Williams might have been inducted into the Hall of Fame for his abilities if not for his decision to throw the 1919 World Series as a member of the Black Sox. In his four seasons, Williams went 81-44 for the White Sox, twice winning more than 20 games.<\/p>\n

1919<\/strong>
\nCenter fielder Happy Felsch <\/strong>tied a major league record by recording four outfield assists in a 15-6 loss to the Red Sox. In that same season, Felsch ended up setting a record for outfielder double plays in a season, with 15.<\/p>\n

1939<\/strong>
\nIt was the first time a major league night game was played in Chicago, with the White Sox besting the St. Louis Browns, 5-2. Johnny Rigney<\/strong> got the complete game win, with 10 strikeouts, before 30,000 fans.<\/p>\n

Two years after this game, in 1941, Rigney married the oldest grandchild of Charles Comiskey<\/strong>, Dorothy \u2014 who would end up with controlling interest in the team in the 1950s and was the person who sold to Bill Veeck<\/strong>. In 1947, Rigney retired as a player and became director of the White Sox farm system, ascending to vice-president (and co-GM with his brother-in-law, Chuck Comiskey<\/strong>) in 1955.<\/p>\n

1983<\/strong>
\nCatcher Carlton Fisk<\/strong> appeared to hit a go-ahead home run in the fifth inning off of Baltimore\u2019s Scott McGregor, only to have home plate umpire Jim Evans overrule third base umpire Greg Kosc and say it was a ground-rule double. The decision was based on the impression that a fan appeared to have leaned over the wall to catch it. The White Sox wound up losing, 2-1. (That fan then called Jimmy Piersall<\/strong>\u2019s radio show afterwards to give his side of the story. TV replays showed he was not leaning over the wall when he caught the ball.)<\/p>\n

Manager Tony La Russa<\/strong> went ballistic \u2026 arguing, kicking dirt, then pulling the third-base bag out of the ground and flinging it towards the Sox dugout. Naturally, he was thrown out for his tantrum. It was just another in a series of bizarre plays that took place against Baltimore down through the years.<\/p>\n

1984<\/strong>
\nTwo days after he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, the White Sox retired Luis Aparicio<\/strong>\u2019s No. 11. Little Looie became the fourth White Sox player so honored, after Luke Appling <\/strong>(1975), Nellie Fox <\/strong>(1976, following his untimely death the prior December) and Minnie Mi\u00f1oso <\/strong>(1983).<\/p>\n

The retirement forced the relatively rare occurrence of a player changing uniform numbers mid-season; Rudy Law<\/strong> had to swap his No. 11 for No. 23.<\/p>\n

1996 <\/strong>
\nEven after a 3-1 loss at Yankee Stadium, the White Sox held a 67-54 record, five games back of Cleveland in the Al Central but 3 1\/2 games up in the Wild Card race. The club went into a tailspin, however, dropping its next 10-of-13 to fall to 70-64 and a game-and-a-half behind Baltimore for the wild card (there was just one extra playoff slot in those days).<\/p>\n

While the White Sox did get hot enough by the end of the month to briefly regain Wild Card status, the club ended 1996 at 85-77, out of the playoffs and tied for just sixth-best in the American League.<\/p>\n

2008<\/strong>
\nIn a 9-2 win over the Royals at U.S. Cellular Field, the Sox hit four consecutive home runs for the first time in franchise history \u2014 a feat that also, of course, ties the MLB record as well. The four came in a six-run sixth inning, and were hit by Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, Alexei Ram\u00edrez<\/strong> and Juan Uribe<\/strong>, all with two outs. It was the sixth time in major league history a team hit four home runs in a row. Alexei sent the bat he used in the game to the Baseball Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

Also in the game, White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin<\/strong> set a major league record when he was hit by a pitch for the sixth consecutive game. Quentin would get hit 20 times in 2008.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
