<\/main>Atlanta Braves fans can’t wait for this season to be over, but maybe some of their players will still get a shot to make the postseason.<\/p>\n

Major League Baseball’s waiver deadline is Aug. 31, and the Braves, improbably, are in the position to dump a few players if they care about minimizing their payroll by season’s end. That only applies to a select few, but the names are interesting.<\/p>\n

What if, for instance, the Braves decide to give closer Raisel Iglesias a shot to pitch for a team still gunning for a playoff spot<\/p>\n

No one would say no to bullpen help at this time of year, and the remainder of Iglesias’ $16 million salary would still clear $5 million in payroll. The logic is straightforward enough.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, FanSided’s Christopher Kline predicted that the\u00a0Braves would waive\u00a0Iglesias, sending the 35-year-old to a new destination by the start of September.<\/p>\n

“Maybe Atlanta sticks it out and tries to re-sign Iglesias in the offseason. But he’s 35, so the clock is ticking on an impressive career. An amicable split may benefit all parties involved,” wrote Kline.<\/p>\n

“Iglesias can hit waivers and join a contender of his choosing, while Atlanta can call up one of their premium minor-league arms and explore different combinations in the bullpen. It’s time to start thinking about life after Iglesias and the starting rotation still needs a ton of work, if that’s the route Anthopoulos decides to go.”<\/p>\n

To briefly correct Kline, Iglesias wouldn’t exactly have his pick of the litter. Teams would get the choice to pick up the remainder of his contract in reverse order of record, meaning he’d likely land with a team in the heat of the wild card race.<\/p>\n

And perhaps it would be a difference-maker for that team, because despite his 4.34 ERA, Iglesias has been very solid for the last two months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
