Just when it seemed like the Houston Astros were on cruise control atop the AL West, a twist in the bullpen could shake things up-and the Texas Rangers might have a reason to perk up.<\/p>\n
Josh Hader, the Astros’ high-octane closer and one of the most dominant arms in baseball, is dealing with shoulder discomfort. And while the severity is still unknown, it\u2019s enough to have Houston hitting the brakes a bit.<\/p>\n
Hader was pulled from his throwing routine on Monday after feeling something wasn\u2019t right. According to Astros manager Joe Espada, the left-hander reported the discomfort while doing his plyometric work ahead of his throwing session, prompting the team to send him out immediately for testing.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re now in wait-and-see mode, with results expected soon.<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s be clear-nobody wants to see a talent like Hader on the shelf. But if you’re the Rangers, you can\u2019t help but see opportunity in what\u2019s suddenly become a very uncertain situation for your division rivals.<\/p>\n
The timing could turn out to be more than coincidental. While Hader has been lights out for the majority of the season-sporting a microscopic ERA well under 2.00 through the first few months-he started to show some vulnerability in July, posting a 4.09 ERA.<\/p>\n
That dip might\u2019ve been a signal that something wasn\u2019t quite right physically. Now, it appears whatever was simmering may have started boiling over.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s been a season of “next man up” for the Texas Rangers, who\u2019ve had more than their fair share of bad fortune when it comes to health. Losing key players like Corey Seager, Jake Burger, Joc Pederson, Evan Carter, and Jon Gray for stretches has tested their depth and resilience. Even ace Nathan Eovaldi-who\u2019s pitching his way into serious Cy Young consideration-has missed some turns in the rotation.<\/p>\n
But this is where depth, timing, and a little bit of luck all come into play. The Rangers still have the firepower to go on a run, especially if the Astros find themselves navigating a blown tire at the back of the bullpen.<\/p>\n
Hader isn\u2019t just any closer-he\u2019s the guy Espada likes to hand the ball to when the game is on the line. Without that security blanket, Houston suddenly looks a little more beatable late in games.<\/p>\n
None of this guarantees anything for Texas, of course. But the margin for error in a playoff chase is razor thin, and any shift in the stability of a team like the Astros-especially at the closer position-can be the kind of crack a contender like the Rangers can exploit.<\/p>\n
The next 48 hours will be key.
