The Atlanta Braves have been going through it the last few weeks. It started with AJ Smith-Shawver’s injury.<\/p>\n
Then Chris Sale fractured his ribs during his bid for a shutout.<\/p>\n
Spencer Schwellenbach followed not long after with an elbow fracture.<\/p>\n
As if that wasn’t enough,\u00a0Grant Holmes had to leave his last start\u00a0early after dealing with pain in his elbow with little in the way of answers internally as to how the Braves would cover his innings.<\/p>\n
Now, after Holmes landed on the 60-day IL with elbow discomfort.<\/p>\n
Atlanta’s starting rotation is now without every pitcher that started the season.<\/p>\n
It’s put them in a tough spot and they’re practically hoping they can make it through the last two months at this point.<\/p>\n
However, an obvious “solution” presented itself as the\u00a0Braves made a trade on Sunday to acquire pitcher Erick Fedde from the Cardinals. Fedde was acquired for a player to be named later or cash considerations.<\/p>\n

Before getting to the trade, the biggest news here is Holmes getting moved to the 60-day IL.<\/p>\n
For those doing that math at home, immediately putting him on the long-term injured list means Holmes’ 2025 season is over.<\/p>\n
It is exceedingly likely that when Holmes had his elbow looked at by doctors today, he did not get good news.<\/p>\n
As for Fedde, this would have been a more exciting move last year when he was pitching well.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the\u00a0Cardinals had just DFA’d Fedde a few days ago because his 5.22 ERA across 20 starts wasn’t cutting it.<\/p>\n
That Fedde got all the way to the Braves on the waiver wire is pretty indicative of what the the league thinks of Fedde right now, but Atlanta has to try something to stop the bleeding.<\/p>\n
At this point, the\u00a0sheer number of Braves arms on the injured list\u00a0is getting hard to manage and just holding them out until 2026 is making more and more sense.<\/p>\n
The Braves are clearly not going anywhere and you can probably expect some “creative” roster solutions like Fedde the rest of the way just so Atlanta can get to the end of the season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
