Boston Red Sox rookie Hunter Dobbins came with fighting words.<\/p>\n

Ahead of his first-ever game against the Yankees, the right-handed Dobbins didn\u2019t hide his disdain for the team in the Bronx.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Yankees were the last team to give me a contract, I\u2019d retire,\u201d Dobbins, 25, told the Boston Herald before his start in Sunday night\u2019s series finale at Yankee Stadium.<\/p>\n

Dobbins hails from Bryan, Texas, and while he didn\u2019t grow up rooting for a specific team, his father was a diehard Red Sox fan.<\/p>\n

The Red Sox drafted Dobbins in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB Draft.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think whoever I was playing with or whoever I would have been drafted by, I\u2019d still hate the Yankees, so Sunday should be a fun one,\u201d Dobbins told the newspaper. \u201cI\u2019m hoping I hit a career-high in velo or something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dobbins\u2019 comments caught the attention of Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., who on Sunday advocated on social media for more trash talk in baseball.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt adds a little bit of fun,\u201d Chisholm later said in the clubhouse of Dobbins\u2019 remarks. \u201cIt adds a lot of spiciness. You enjoy it. You\u2019re even more locked in as a fan because you know what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The situation earned a laugh from Yankees manager Aaron Boone, whose first reaction to Dobbins\u2019 jab was, \u201cHe\u2019s young.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s a dig at our players,\u201d Boone said. \u201cIt\u2019s an interesting comment, as a player, to make that. I think it\u2019s just a comment of his love of his team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dobbins made his MLB debut in April and entered Sunday with a 2-1 record and a 4.06 ERA over nine appearances, including seven starts.<\/p>\n

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he had not spoken to Dobbins about the level of hostility he could expect from Yankees fans after his candid salvo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always said that when they put the mic in front of you, you can\u2019t say whatever you want,\u201d Cora said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be hostile anyway, so he just added a little more, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, the Dobbins drama added fuel to one of baseball\u2019s best rivalries, albeit one that\u2019s become milder in recent years with the Red Sox missing the playoffs each of the last four seasons. Boston entered Sunday with a 31-35 record and was 9.5 games behind the division-leading Yankees.<\/p>\n

Cora, who played for six teams during his 14 year MLB career, said Sunday that he wouldn\u2019t choose retirement over playing for any of the 30 teams.<\/p>\n

Chisholm shared a similar sentiment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I would ever say that. I feel like that closes doors,\u201d Chisholm said, before adding of Dobbins\u2019 diss, \u201cBut I like it though. I do like it. I like the competitiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n

VOLPE RETURNS<\/h4>\n

Anthony Volpe was back in the Yankees\u2019 starting lineup Sunday, two days after a hit-by-pitch to his left elbow forced him out of Friday\u2019s series opener.<\/p>\n

X-rays and a CT scan came back negative for Volpe.<\/p>\n

The shortstop entered in the eighth inning of Saturday\u2019s game as a pinch runner and played an inning on defense but did not take an at-bat.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t swing at all yesterday, so was hopeful today but not sure,\u201d Boone said before Sunday\u2019s game. \u201c[Volpe] came in a couple of hours ago, feeling a lot better, got his treatment, and then went down and hit \u2026 and felt good.\u201d<\/p>\n

INFIELD ADDITION<\/h4>\n

On Sunday, the Yankees claimed infielder CJ Alexander off of waivers from the Athletics, then optioned him to Triple-A Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre.<\/p>\n

Alexander, 28, made his MLB debut with the Kansas City Royals last season and appeared in six MLB games with the A\u2019s this year.<\/p>\n

The lefty-swinging Alexander is 4-for-25 in his MLB career. In the minors, Alexander owns a career average of .254 with 85 home runs in 1,919 at-bats.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
