June is here, and the Boston Red Sox’s 2025 campaign is still trending in the wrong direction. Tuesday’s 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Los Angeles Angels dropped the Red Sox’s record to 7-14 in their last 21 games, making it clear that manager Alex Cora must do something soon, or else the front office might have no choice but to blow things up.<\/p>\n
With the losses constantly piling up, the Red Sox could certainly use a fresh start, which they’ll eventually get once the MLB All-Star Break arrives. There’s over a month until that happens, though.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, one of Boston’s former starters just landed a fresh start with a fellow American League club.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday morning, the Cincinnati Reds announced that former Red Sox starting pitcher Wade Miley has been signed to an MLB contract. The 38-year-old southpaw had been with the Reds on a minor-league deal since January, and will now get a chance to prove he still has ‘it’ at the big-league level.<\/p>\n
Red Sox fans will remember Miley from his spending the 2015 campaign in Boston following an offseason trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He signed a three-year, $19.25 million extension with the Red Sox before even playing a game, only to go 11-11 with a 4.46 ERA and 147 strikeouts across 32 starts.<\/p>\n
The Red Sox didn’t feel like Miley’s performance matched his salary, resulting in his being traded to the Seattle Mariners during the 2015-16 offseason. He’s since struggled to find a permanent home, playing games with the Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, and Reds across the last decade.<\/p>\n
With the clock ticking on his career, Miley can’t afford to squander his new chance with the Reds. He’ll have to be better than he has been in the minors if he wants to stick around, though. He’s 1-2 with an 8.84 ERA and 15 Ks in 19 1\/3 innings across seven starts split between Triple-A and High-A, highlighting just how better he must pitch during his call-up.<\/p>\n
Interestingly enough, the Red Sox will host the Reds at Fenway Park less than two weeks before the All-Star festivities begin, leaving time to tell if Miley will still be a big-league pitcher when that series arrives.<\/p>\n
