More than a year after he initially signed, Lucas Giolito is finally set to make his Red Sox debut.<\/p>\n

The Red Sox announced that they have activated Giolito from the 15-day injured list and that the right-hander will make his first start of the season on Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.<\/p>\n

To clear space on the active roster, the Red Sox also placed left-hander Brennan Bernardino on the bereavement list.<\/p>\n

Giolito missed all of last season after undergoing internal brace surgery on his right elbow following an injury suffered during spring training. Originally signed ahead of the 2024 season on a two-year, $38.5 million contract, Giolito had previously\u00a0been among the most durable pitchers in baseball, making 29 or more starts in five consecutive 162-game seasons, plus every start in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.<\/p>\n

The right-hander made a full recovery and was expected to be ready in time for Opening Day, but on the very first pitch of his spring training debut Giolito suffered a low-grade hamstring strain in his left leg. The injury was not serious but it set back his progression enough that he wasn\u2019t able to ramp up in time for the start of the season.<\/p>\n

Once the regular season began, Giolito started a rehab assignment and made five minor league appearances over the ensuring three weeks. In those five outings Giolito posted a 5.19 ERA in 17.1 innings, striking out 17 while walking 13. His last outing was shaky, as the veteran walked six batters while allowing three runs in 4.2 innings.<\/p>\n

Still, the 30-year-old came out of those outings healthy, and now the Red Sox hope he can finally contribute to the big league rotation.<\/p>\n
