When the Boston Red Sox swooped in at the last minute and won the Alex Bregman sweepstakes and signed the third baseman to a three-year deal worth $120 million, many expected Bregman would thrive at Fenway Park.<\/p>\n

He’s done exactly that, as he is currently batting .321 with four home runs, seven doubles and 16 RBIs. He also boasts a .929 OPS, good for 21st among all qualified hitters. As well as ranking 16th in batting average and 21st in OPS, Bregman also ranks 20th in slugging percentage.<\/p>\n

When examining those numbers, it would seem that one would think, “Wow, he’s having an excellent season.” And while that is the case, it is not enough to impress Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer, who gave Bregman a “meh” first impression grade so far this season. His reasoning is due to the defense — or lack thereof — from Bregman so far this season.<\/p>\n

“The Red Sox lead the majors with 20 errors, and a team-high four of those are on Bregman,” Rymer wrote. “He’s looked plenty spry in the field, but his throws have been, shall we say, adventurous.”<\/p>\n

While it is still early in the season and Bregman is getting used to playing third base at a new home ballpark, the drama surrounding who would play third base between he and Rafael Devers could be a driving point in his early season defensive struggles.<\/p>\n

Given his track record, Bregman will improve and could very well have a two- or three-month stretch without making a single error. But as of now, he will be under scrutiny due to the abnormal struggles at third base.<\/p>\n
