Much of the Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason has been dominated by the franchise’s need to beef up Patrick Mahomes’ protection. After 47 total sacks, Mahomes was taken down the most in his career, so it is natural for the Chiefs to have both eyes focused on fixing that troublesome issue.<\/p>\n
For most, that will come in the draft, but let’s not forget the other areas of the roster that the Chiefs need help with, and the defensive line is one that could use some strengthening. With Kansas City not fond of making big, splashy signings at this time of year, a bargain free agent who could slot into the rotation might be beneficial. As such, Bleacher Report has named one free agent who could help each team, and when it came to the Chiefs, recently released defensive tackle Raekwon Davis is that player.<\/p>\n
“The Kansas City Chiefs re-signed Charles Omenihu and still have Chris Jones playing at a high level,” Bleacher Report writes. “However, they could afford to field a deeper defensive-line rotation and don’t have a ton of remaining options at this point in free agency. Davis appeared in all 34 games for the Colts and Dolphins over the past two seasons and tallied 43 tackles, 21 solo stops and three tackles for loss during that span. Still only 27 years old, he has 80 games and 48 starts on his resume.” A solid veteran who can be a plug-and-play defender seems a solid choice. Known for his run-stopping ability, but also for using his strong frame to break through double-teams, Davis isn’t a big stat-getter, but he opens up opportunities for others.<\/p>\n
The Chiefs have Chris Jones and George Karlaftis, a good tandem, but they need more depth at the position, and a cost-effective free agent like Davis could be a shrewd piece of business. Is Davis a signing that will get Chiefs Kingdom excited? Likely not, but depth is key when you’re hunting a Super Bowl, and a shrewd move on Davis provides that.<\/p>\n
