If and when the winless Atlanta Braves turn things around, veteran reliever H\u00e9ctor Neris won’t be around to see the results. Neris, who joined the Braves in early March, elected free agency on Wednesday. Atlanta designated him for assignment earlier this week when the team promoted Jesse Chavez.<\/p>\n
Now, neither is on the active roster. Atlanta designated Chavez for assignment on Tuesday, though the 41-year-old fan favorite will likely return at some point. We can’t say the same for Neris, who allowed five runs in two games. He failed to get an out against the San Diego Padres on Opening Day and took the loss. Although Neris at least recorded three outs on Sunday, he gave up two runs over his lone inning.<\/p>\n
Neris, who turns 36 in June, owns a 3.40 ERA and 107 saves in 12 seasons. He had multiple impressive years with the Philadelphia Phillies and even recorded a 28-save campaign in 2019.<\/p>\n
Neris was pivotal in the Houston Astros’ 2022 World Series run. He struck out nine and allowed a single run over six innings. The veteran reliever followed that up with a career-best 1.71 ERA for Houston a year later.<\/p>\n
Don’t be surprised to see Neris in the minor leagues even if he catches on elsewhere. Recent history hasn’t been kind to the 2022 champion, who posted a 4.10 ERA and -0.2 bWAR for the Astros and Chicago Cubs last season.<\/p>\n
