Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer has been the subject of fan criticism for years. The Cubs have endured a frustrating tenure under Hoyer’s reign, having missed the playoffs in each of the last four seasons and having not advanced past the National League Wild Card series since 2017.<\/p>\n

There is also the looming concern over Kyle Tucker’s one-year contract and failure to lock him up this winter after trading a hefty package to the Houston Astros. However, after trading a resurgent Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees for a little-known prospect in right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet, fans are approaching their boiling points.<\/p>\n

According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN, Chicago has designated Poteet for assignment, to which numerous fans expressed their feelings toward Hoyer: Jed disasterclass. \u2014 Caleb Williams Fan Club (@CalebFC18) March 27, 2025 Can we DFA the Cubs front office? \u2014 SonsofLiberty (@ThomasP11423643) March 27, 2025 This is the latest chapter in the antagonizing relationship between the fanbase and Hoyer, who have rightfully expected more out of this ownership group.<\/p>\n

It’s somewhat understandable that Hoyer did not want to pay Bellinger the final two years of a three-year, $80 million deal he had signed in the 2024 offseason. Tucker, Ian Happ, and Pete Crow-Armstrong can lead the outfield, and Poteet showed flashes as a starter for the Yankees last summer. However, now that Poteet has been DFA’d, it already looks like a lopsided trade. Plus, with Cam Smith breaking the Astros’ Opening Day roster, there are further worries about the Tucker trade, too.<\/p>\n

This is the final year of Hoyer’s contract and it never quite made sense why he would opt for a potential future move in Poteet over the immediate production of Bellinger. If the Cubs do not perform to their division-winning expectations, expect the Chicago mob to be all over Hoyer.<\/p>\n
