After reaching the\u00a0Super Bowl\u00a0last season, the\u00a0San Francisco 49ers\u00a0entered 2024, hoping to return and finish the job.<\/p>\n

But with a 4-4 record midway through the season, injuries have taken a toll on their offense.\u00a0Deebo Samuel,\u00a0Christian McCaffrey, Ricky Pearsall,\u00a0Brandon Aiyuk\u00a0and Jauan Jennings have all been out at some point.<\/p>\n

If the Niners fail to turn things around, would they consider moving one of their stars to clear cap space?<\/p>\n

Chris Licata of Athlon Sports\u00a0floated the idea of trading Samuel when putting together \u201c10 NFL Dream Trade Scenarios That Could Shake Up the League.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not totally out of the question. In June, the former\u00a0second-round pick admitted\u00a0there were talks about a possible trade involving him.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s unclear which team the Niners had discussions with at the time, Licata considered possible landing spots and pointed to the\u00a0New England Patriots\u00a0as a strong option for a potential 2025 offseason deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis would undoubtedly be a 2025 offseason move given\u00a0Samuel\u2019s contract structure,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Licata based his reasoning on two things. First, New England leads the NFL in 2025 cap space.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoney also isn\u2019t an issue considering the Patriots currently have the most 2025 salary cap space in the NFL with over $130 million,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Licata also emphasized the Patriots\u2019 need for an \u201cimmediate impact starter\u201d to pair with their rookie quarterback,\u00a0Drake Maye.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew England should also be in contention for a top-five draft pick that could land the franchise another immediate impact starter to help quarterback Drake Maye,\u201d Licata said. \u201cThe Patriots\u2019 offense needs all the juice it can get, so Samuel\u2019s rushing prowess and overall YAC ability would be a huge needle-mover.\u201d<\/p>\n

Samuel is in his sixth season in the NFL.\u00a0In 2024, he has recorded 24 receptions for 406 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, the 28-year-old has 23 carries for 66 yards and one touchdown.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
