The New York Yankees will be without Gerrit Cole this season after he underwent Tommy John surgery last week. Luis Gil is slated to miss an extended period of time with a lat strain. Clark Schmidt is also dealing with some shoulder problems.<\/p>\n

Although Schmidt noted he feels great after throwing a bullpen just days after being scratched from a spring training matchup, the Yankees may still want to add a starter to their team.<\/p>\n

MLB insider Pat Ragazzo revealed the San Diego Padres are scouting the Yankees, among other teams, as Dylan Cease trade rumors continue to swirl.<\/p>\n

“According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the belief is that Cease is unlikely to be traded since the Padres view themselves as contenders in the National League,” wrote Ragazzo. “However, that hasn’t stopped San Diego from placing scouts on a number of teams’ spring training camps. Among the teams the Padres have been scouting due to Cease interest include: the Mets, Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and a team that has yet to be revealed in the Philadelphia Phillies, per league sources.”<\/p>\n

Cease has been linked to the Yankees in countless rumors this offseason. However, the Yankees are suddenly in desperate need of an ace to replace Cole. Cease has a 3.40 ERA in the last three seasons and has made 30-plus starts in four straight seasons.<\/p>\n

Last season he finished fourth in the National League Cy Young Award voting with a 3.47 ERA and 224 strikeouts. Cease will be a free agent after the season, but the Padres could still demand a top 10 prospect in return for one year of Cease.<\/p>\n
