The New York Yankees recently lost their ace, Gerrit Cole, for the season, as the righty underwent UCL surgery to fix an issue in his throwing elbow. As of now, the Yankees will try to replace Cole with Marcus Stroman and prospect Will Warren, but there’s a chance the Bronx Bombers will look to swing a massive trade to add a starter.<\/p>\n
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently listed the Yankees as the favorites to land former Cy Young winner Sandy Alc\u00e1ntara in a blockbuster trade. Here’s the full deal pitched by Rymer to send the ace to the Bronx: New York Yankees receive: RHP Sandy Alc\u00e1ntara Miami Marlins receive: OF Spencer Jones (No. 2 prospect), SS George Lombard Jr. (No. 3 prospect), RHP Will Warren (No. 5 prospect) “You can’t lose Gerrit Cole for the year because of Tommy John surgery and Luis Gil for three months because of a lat strain and act like everything is okay,” Rymer wrote. “As Eno Sarris covered for The Athletic, those two injuries have reduced New York’s rotation from one of MLB’s best to one of its worst.<\/p>\n
“Ultimately, no team has as much of an incentive to swing big as these Yankees. After coming three wins shy of a World Series title in 2024, they’re in danger of falling much shorter this year if they don’t connect on a such a swing.” While the Yankees may have the most incentive to swing a blockbuster deal for the righty, this feels like a bit too much to give up to land him.<\/p>\n
New York doesn’t have a great farm system as things sit right now. Trading three of its top prospects for Alc\u00e1ntara would be a crushing blow to the system. For the Marlins, they may even want another young prospect in the deal. Trading for the Miami ace isn’t going to be easy and there’s potential that this package wouldn’t be enough to get a deal done, as shocking as that sounds.<\/p>\n
