MLB insider has the latest\" width=\"300\" height=\"600\" \/><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption>Yankees ace Gerrit Cole has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery to address his late right elbow discomfort.AP<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p id=\"WU35SJ435BA5FIYYKJFJV5J57E\">The New York Yankees&#8217; rotation is weaker than what was projected entering spring training, thanks to injuries to Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil.<\/p>\n<p id=\"NFYUZSGUUBEXLDKBOE47QWQFGI\">Gil (lat strain, out three months) is at least expected to return this season, though Cole (Tommy John surgery) will be out until sometime next season. Thus, pitching depth is emerging as a concern.<\/p>\n<p id=\"PWWSZVBOYFDBPDN7CZKQVLDJKU\">Will that force general manager Brian Cashman into a move? Not so fast, apparently. it doesn\u2019t seem like the Yankees are going to look for a solution externally yet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"IPVOGQJTDNDGNMNCFKDQRRCD2Y\">\u201cIt seems to me that they don\u2019t like what is out there,\u201d Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic said on Foul Territory on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"NE3IR5A4B5BEHHDUBADPFIF4GQ\">Pitchers that are \u201cout there\u201d include free agents Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson and Spencer Turnbull, among others. They could also dive into the trade market, but that could prove prohibitive at this time of year.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4QOMNWCF7FDNJNW6ACZFEOZQOI\">\u201cIt seems to me that they\u2019re not enamored with the options out there,\u201d Rosenthal said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ZDT3L66E6NC5JPGSCVB3QSW2XQ\">The Yankees also have to consider the financial cost; because their payroll puts them beyond the highest luxury tax, they will be taxed at 110%.<\/p>\n<p id=\"N5SY5BMGM5DSBJAHHJXEWOXZ2Q\">On Tuesday, one day after the Yankees announced Cole would undergo Tommy John surgery, Cashman appeared willing to wait.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7FNFSNV525EBXOXHEC3UGX3PHE\">\u201cWe\u2019ll just evaluate what\u2019s available, and this time of year, very little is available,\u201d Cashman said. \u201cNormally, the more significant opportunities don\u2019t exist until the trade deadline.<\/p>\n<p id=\"JZYH4ZBPGNHPLLYHIVTPQRCLFU\">\u201cWhen we\u2019ve had these conversations many a time over, you hope you can withstand injuries and avoid injuries early from spring training up through the draft because going outside the organization is just that much more difficult to do.
