On Thursday morning, the Orioles released their Spring Breakout roster and it’s mostly as expected, with one surprising omission.<\/p>\n
The group is led by top prospect Samuel Basallo, who’s gotten off to a hot start in spring training.<\/p>\n
However, his counterpart Coby Mayo won’t be joining the group when they face off against the Yankees next Friday.<\/p>\n
Mayo is still in major league camp, and at this point potentially fighting for a spot on the Opening Day roster.<\/p>\n
With the recent news that Gunnar Henderson’s status for Opening Day potentially in question, if Mayo performs well enough he could see time in Baltimore to start the year.<\/p>\n
When you combine that with the fact that he’s already made his major league debut, it’s understandable that Mayo won’t join the rest of his peers during the Spring Breakout matchup.<\/p>\n
However, Basallo is expected to play against the Yankees, and he’ll be joined by a couple other interesting catching prospects in Ethan Anderson, Miguel Rodr\u00edguez, and Creed Willems.<\/p>\n
Anderson was the 61st pick in the 2024 draft and will likely start the year at High-A. Willems tore the cover off the ball in the Arizona Fall League, and is looking to make some noise in the minors in 2025.<\/p>\n
Orioles top prospects highlight list of Spring Breakout roster inclusions<\/strong><\/p>\n The infield group will be led by top-10 shortstop prospect Griff O’Ferrall. The O’s took him with the 32nd pick in last year’s draft and he showed strong plate discipline in the minors, though he hasn’t hit for much power.<\/p>\n He’ll be joined by Leandro Arias, Aron Estrada, DJ Layton, Joshua Liranzo, Fernando Peguero, and Max Wagner.<\/p>\n There’s a decent amount of hype around Estrada and Arias, though we’ll see how much run they get during this lone matchup.<\/p>\n Top prospect Enrique Bradfield Jr and 2024 first round pick Vance Honeycutt headline the group of outfielders.<\/p>\n Bradfield probably won’t contribute until 2026 but if the right circumstances arise, he could theoretically debut later this year if the O’s need a good defensive outfielder, or a pinch runner later in the season.<\/p>\n Honeycutt’s poor plate discipline carried over into his first taste of the minors. He has a lot to work on in 2025 if he wants to become a legit threat.<\/p>\n In addition to Bradfield and Honeycutt, the O’s are sending Dylan Beavers, Jud Fabian, Stiven Martinez, Austin Overn, Jordan Sanchez, and Thomas Sosa to man the outfield.<\/p>\n Fabian and Beavers made news last week as part of the group that led the Orioles in a big comeback victory over the Twins.<\/p>\n For the pitching staff, the O’s have chosen to leave Chayce McDermott, Cade Povich, and Brandon Young off the Spring Breakout roster.<\/p>\n The group will instead be headlined by RHPs Michael Forret, Nestor German, Keeler Morfe, and Patrick Reilly, all of whom appear in the top-11 of MLB Pipeline’s latest Orioles’ prospect rankings.
