It’s less than two weeks away from the start of the 2025 MLB regular season, an exciting time for fans. The Chicago Cubs are getting set as they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2025 Tokyo Series on Mar. 18 and 19. In part of the participation for the upcoming season, the Cubs have made some more roster moves.<\/p>\n
Chicago has moved five pitchers down to the Minor Leagues, leaving the roster at 54 players left to battle for the 40-man roster. Caleb Kilian is a long-time minor league pitcher for the Cubs since he was traded in 2021 from the San Francisco Giants. He has appeared in eight regular season Major League games, starting five, and accounting for an ERA of 9.22.<\/p>\n
Kilian has delivered 21 strikeouts while allowing 35 hits, 31 runs with two home runs and 20 walks in 27.1 innings. On Dec. 17, the Cubs traded star outfielder Cody Bellinger and $5 million in cash considerations to the New York Yankees in exchange for Cody Poteet. One of the main goals was to get out of Bellinger’s expensive contract.<\/p>\n
Despite playing in 13 games in three different seasons since 2021, Poteet had a chance to earn himself a roster spot this season with the Cubs. In two games played this Spring Training, Poteet posted an ERA of 10.80, five hits, four runs, including a home run, and three walks while delivering one strikeout. Of the seven most active pitchers during Spring Training, Poteet had the worst ERA with the next highest being 6.00.<\/p>\n
24-year-old Jack Neely made his MLB debut last season for the Cubs. He played relatively well in Spring Training and has a chance to be added to the 40-man roster later in the season. Gavin Hollowell played one regular season for the Cubs last season after playing 26 games for the Colorado Rockies in 2023.<\/p>\n
He played in one Spring Training game, delivering two strikeouts but allowing two hits, including a home run. Riley Martin has yet to appear in a Major League game since being drafted in the sixth round by the Cubs in 2021. He played 126 games in the minors since 2021. He impressed this spring by not allowing any runs and only one hit while delivering three strikeouts in two innings pitched. He and Neely have shown the most potential this Spring Training.<\/p>\n
