Jayden Daniels has the Washington Commanders on a faster track to contention than the franchise anticipated. Less than a year ago, the Commanders picked him at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft and began laying the foundation for the future of their franchise. A return to the playoffs already marked a successful first season, but Daniels’ efforts pushed them past that point and into the NFC Championship Game. Such progress has reshaped the outlook for this offseason. The Commanders find themselves among the elite contenders in the league and possess the cap space to solidify that claim.<\/p>\n
Now, it appears they are looking to put those assets into action. According to FOX NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Commanders along with the Houston Texans have shown “significant interest” in San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel. Samuel requested a trade from the team back in January and according to general manager John Lynch, the Niners are ready and willing to grant it. Given their abundance of cap space, it was assumed that Washington would be in the market for another receiver to pair with Terry McLaurin. This year’s group did a solid job in playing with Daniels, but the Commanders are looking to move the needle here.<\/p>\n
Samuel regressed in the 2024 season, reeling in 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns. However, part of that reduced production can be attributed to the overall funk of the Niners last season, unable to ever find their groove amid a 6-11 campaign.<\/p>\n
The Niners’ star is looking for a fresh start and the Commanders would be an ideal place to find that. Samuel immediately slots in as the team’s No. 2 receiver, forming an elite pass-catching duo with McLaurin. However, it is clear that Washington will have to compete for Samuel if they really want him on their team. San Francisco sees themselves returning to the NFC title picture next season, making the Commanders a direct that to that objective.<\/p>\n
Barring any changes to landscape or an incredible offer from Washington, there is less of an incentive in moving Samuel to the Commanders. Regardless, it is perfectly clear that the Commanders are interested in adding another playmaker in the coming months. As of now, it seems Samuel is at the top of their list.<\/p>\n
