INDIANAPOLIS \u2014 The\u00a0Dallas Cowboys\u00a0gave up a fourth-round pick to take a look at\u00a0Trey Lance.\"Dallas<\/p>\n

The club is now ready to invest another pick in a young quarterback to develop behind\u00a0Dak Prescott.<\/p>\n

Prescott will be the highest-paid player in the NFL this season. That doesn\u2019t leave much money to spread among his backups, which directly impacts Lance and\u00a0Cooper Rush, who are both free agents.<\/p>\n

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys\u2019 chief operating officer and co-owner, doesn\u2019t expect Lance to return.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe took a shot a Trey and wanted to do that,\u201d Jones told\u00a0The Dallas Morning News\u00a0<\/i>at the scouting combine. \u201cWe think the world of Trey.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut us having Dak signed up for the long term, I think he\u2019s probably going to be looking for something different.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cowboys acquired Lance from San Francisco 18 months ago, just ahead of the team\u2019s final 2023 preseason game. His only full offseason and training camp with Dallas came last season.<\/p>\n

Lance played in just four games and had one start in his time with the Cowboys. He completed 25 of 41 passes for 266 yards with one interception, and was sacked four times. He rushed for 41 yards on 11 carries.<\/p>\n

New head coach Brian Schottenheimer and quarterbacks coach\u00a0Steve Shimko\u00a0have mentioned to Jones they want the team to draft a quarterback to develop.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft,\u201d Jones said. \u201cI don\u2019t know where that\u2019s going to be.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey. It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first. They always go so much higher than what you think.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Stephen<\/p>\n

And what about Rush, who has compiled a 9-5 record while filling in for Prescott in his Cowboys career?<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know how much we think of Cooper,\u201d Jones said. \u201cWe just don\u2019t know what he\u2019s going to cost.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we\u2019re paying Dak what we\u2019re paying him, unfortunately we do have to go cheap there.\u201d<\/p>\n
