I hope it goes well today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n What\u2019s happened?\u00a0<\/strong>Samuel Basallo was 1-for-3 and caught five innings in the Orioles\u2019 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies before 8.702 at BayCare Ballpark on Sunday.<\/p>\n The 20-year-old Basallo, who caught for the first time in a Grapefruit League game, successfully challenged a call when Brandon Young was pitching and got a ball on Kyle Schwarber reversed to a strike.<\/p>\n \u201cI caught the ball, and I thought it was a strike, so I immediately tapped my mask,\u201d Basallo said through a translator. \u201cLast year, I had some experience with it, and I used it a few times. I didn\u2019t use it as much as one would think because I was scared to fail. I used it \u2026 a few times. It felt really good that I was able to catch today. I felt really good behind the plate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The left-hand hitting Basallo grounded to first in the first, struck out in the fourth and singled in the fifth.<\/p>\n \u201cI feel like I\u2019m learning a lot,\u201d he said. \u201cI feel like I\u2019ve been able to mature a lot, being able to look at the game a different way this spring. We\u2019ll see if we\u2019re going to push guys back or if we\u2019re going to throw guys in the cage. He hit a couple of balls hard. I thought he did a great job for his first start in a big league spring training game.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Cade Povich pitched two hitless innings and struck out one. Garrett Stubbs, who reached on an error by first baseman Emmanuel Rivera, was the only baserunner.<\/p>\n \u201cFirst game, playing out there, I\u2019m not trying to overdo anything,\u201d Povich said. \u201cCommand the zone, work on a pitch mix. It was good to see a good mix of right and left-handed hitters] today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Povich said working with Basallo was easy.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s been great. I\u2019ve gotten to throw a few bullpens, a few lives to him. Very impressed with his framing,\u201d he said. \u201cI think even his pitch calling. For the most part we were pretty on page with what I wanted to throw, and I think that\u2019s going to come with reps to where we\u2019re more on the page. For the few times he\u2019s caught me so far, I\u2019m really impressed with his stuff.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n After working on the backfields and in an empty Ed Smith Stadium, Povich enjoyed pitching in front of a lively ballpark, but he said he didn\u2019t try to \u201camp up or do too much.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s why the focus for me today was just to take it easy, command and not really try to do overdo anything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Povich will change his approach as he builds up.<\/p>\n \u201cIncreased innings, as I face probably more righties throughout the spring, I\u2019ll probably be able to work on more stuff as well,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think I threw a curveball today, would have liked to have mixed in a couple more changeups as well. As spring continues and I\u2019m going more innings, I\u2019ll be able to work on some of that stuff, and outing by outing, just increasing the intensity while keeping the kind of control I had there today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Hyde liked what he saw from Povich.<\/p>\n \u201cHe came to camp ready to go,\u201d he said. \u201cShowed really good stuff today. I was impressed. The changeup has come a long way. That\u2019s continuing to improve. He has good life to his fastball and good offspeed stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n Vimael Machin had three hits, including a home run. Coby Mayo and Jordyn Adams drove in two runs. Brandon Young pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Minor league right-hander Kyle Brnovich pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four.<\/p>\n What\u2019s up with? Emmanuel Rivera\u00a0<\/strong>was a nice surprise for the Orioles last season, hitting .313 with a .948 OPS, four home runs and 14 RBIs in 27 games.<\/p>\n In Saturday\u2019s Grapefruit League opener, Rivera hit a two-run home run. On Sunday, Rivera was 1-for-3 with an RBI.<\/p>\n \u2018\u2019Trying to continue to do when I got here last year, and remain with that consistency going forward,\u201d Rivera said through a translator. \u201cI was obviously very happy with that. Not just because of my performance but because I was able to help the team win. I\u2019m hoping to continue to do that this year with whatever opportunity I\u2019m given.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Rivera was removed from the roster on January 31st<\/sup>\u00a0and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk on February 7th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a baseball player, it\u2019s not my mentality to think about those things,\u201d Rivera said. \u201cMy job is to come here and work hard and try to do what I can to help this team win. In baseball, you can expect just about anything. That\u2019s just the way it was, and I come here with the same mentality, to help the team win. I\u2019m happy to be here now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n What\u2019s what?\u00a0<\/strong>The Orioles have Robinson Chirinos, a longtime major league catcher, at their bench coach, and Tim Cossins, who\u2019s an excellent catching instructor. Hyde was a minor league catcher and occasionally works with catchers and with Cossins.<\/p>\n \u201cRobbie\u2019s involved a little bit, also,\u201d Hyde said. \u201cIt\u2019s the first position I notice. Me and Tim have constant conversations. If it\u2019s something that sticks out for me. I\u2019ll approach a player about it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n What\u2019s the word?\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019re waiting and seeing coming off Tommy John. First year back. Some guys get there.
