A desire to evaluate younger players while maintaining roster flexibility led to the Mets backing away from Jose Iglesias this offseason, according to president of baseball operations David Stearns.<\/p>\n

In his initial press conference of spring training, Stearns on Wednesday indicated that it\u2019s unlikely the free agent Iglesias will return.<\/p>\n

Iglesias last year was the ringleader \u2014 producing both in the lineup and emerging as a key clubhouse figure \u2014 of the \u201cOMG\u201d Mets who resurrected their season after a rough start and reached the NLCS.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere we are now, for that role on our team, it\u2019s important for us to keep some avenues open for our younger players,\u201d Stearns said. \u201cWe think it\u2019s important for us to have some roster flexibility with that spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stearns noted the club at one point last season didn\u2019t have a backup position player with minor league options remaining, leaving the Mets \u201cfrozen\u201d for a stretch.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really tough to freeze your entire position player roster,\u201d Stearns said.<\/p>\n

Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos are the infield starters.<\/p>\n

Those with an opportunity in camp to win a backup job include Nick Madrigal, Brett Baty and Luisangel Acu\u00f1a.<\/p>\n
