The Cubs released a list of 20 non-roster invitees to Major League Spring Training on Friday that was headlined by top prospect\u00a0Matt Shaw, who\u00a0ranks 19th<\/a>\u00a0on MLB Pipeline\u2019s\u00a0Top 100 Prospects list\u00a0and looks positioned to compete for Chicago\u2019s starting third-base job.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Shaw was one of four Top 100 prospects who received invitations to the Cubs\u2019 big league camp. The others are right-hander\u00a0Cade Horton\u00a0(No. 52), catcher\u00a0Moises Ballesteros\u00a0(No. 69) and infielder\u00a0James Triantos\u00a0(No. 73).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The 23-year-old Shaw was Chicago\u2019s first-round Draft pick in 2023 out of the University of Maryland and has already rocketed to the top of the farm system. He posted a .284\/.379\/.488 slash line during a ’24 season split between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa, with 21 home runs and 31 stolen bases in 523 plate appearances.<\/p>\n

His path to third base at Wrigley Field was cleared\u00a0when the Cubs traded big league third baseman Isaac Paredes and\u00a0Top 100 prospect Cam Smith\u00a0to the Astros in the\u00a0Kyle Tucker deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNo matter how much the opportunity might present itself,\u201d Shaw said last month, \u201cit\u2019s still going to be, \u2018You\u2019ve got to earn that spot.\u2019 Hopefully, given the opportunity, I\u2019ll be able to show what I\u2019ve got and be able to earn that position.\u201d<\/p>\n
