On Wednesday, the Cowboys announced that vice president of player personnel Will McClay has penned a multi-year contract extension to stay with the franchise.<\/p>\n

McClay’s previous deal with the Cowboys was set to expire after the 2025 NFL Draft.<\/p>\n

The 58-year-old player recruiter has been in Dallas since 2002 and has had the current role since 2017.<\/p>\n

However, fans of the Cowboys have taken issue with Jones over the extension on social media<\/span>.<\/p>\n

“Cowboys remain the laughingstock of the NFL. Sell the team Jerry Jones<\/span> (He never will),” one commented.<\/p>\n

“Nothing will change,” another wrote.<\/p>\n

“Jerry suck at his job,” a third added.<\/p>\n

During McClay’s two-decade-plus tenure in Dallas, the organization has a 4-10 record in the playoffs.<\/p>\n

Still, McClay has been credited with overseeing the Cowboys’ draft strategy since 2014.<\/p>\n

The franchise has drafted 15 Pro Bowlers and six All-Pros, and McCloy has been credited with the draft picks of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb<\/span>, and Micah Parsons, among others.<\/p>\n

McClay has had as much power as any executive who isn’t officially a president or general manager.<\/p>\n

It’s worth noting the Cowboys’ front office consists of the owner, Jones, acting as the general manager, and the owner’s son, Stephen, is the director of player personnel.<\/p>\n

The McClay extension comes after a disappointing 7-10 season that saw Prescott suffer a season-ending hamstring injury.<\/p>\n

Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys parted ways after the 61-year-old’s five-year run.<\/p>\n

Last week, Jones stunned the NFL world with his head coaching hire of Brian Schottenheimer.<\/p>\n

The son of the late NFL icon Marty Schottenheimer has no head coaching experience and has been a career-long assistant.<\/p>\n

During Schottenheimer’s introductory press conference, Jones admitted the hire “is as big a risk as you can take.<\/p>\n

“How often do you have someone that has 25 years of working through the human relationship and aspiring to learn – having his ears and eyes wide open – looking for techniques and looking for things that make coaches better?” he added.<\/p>\n

The Cowboys have also hired Matt Eberflus to be their defensive coordinator.<\/p>\n

Eberflus’ was the Chicago<\/span> Bears’ head coach for the last three campaigns<\/span> and was fired in November.<\/p>\n
