New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza hasn\u2019t done a lot of gloating over landing right fielder Juan Soto this offseason on a 15-year contract that can reach $800 million \u2014 at least not publicly.<\/p>\n

But that doesn\u2019t mean he didn\u2019t have a little fun at the expense of New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, his longtime friend, in a more subtle way. On Tuesday, Boone explained to WFAN how it went down at the Baseball Writers’ Association of America Dinner on Saturday, first saying Mendoza has kept to himself before acknowledging the jab.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, so Mendy\u2019s been very, very delicate with that,\u201d Boone said. \u201cLike we actually had dinner \u2014 him and his wife and mine and my wife in the city this past weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then we sat next to each other on the dais at the writer\u2019s dinner. The yearbook for the writer\u2019s dinner \u2014 we\u2019re kind of thumbing through it, about halfway through \u2014 and he turns it over on the back and it\u2019s Soto and all the Mets stuff, and he just kind of slides it over to me like … I\u2019m like, \u2018C\u2019mon, man!\u2019<\/p>\n

Boone had a good laugh about it all. Mendoza was Boone\u2019s bench coach from 2020-23 before Mendoza was hired as the Mets’ coach to start the 2024 campaign, which was the end of a 15-year run for him in the Yankees’ organization.<\/p>\n

After outfielder Aaron Judge took heat for revealing he hadn\u2019t spoken to Soto at all to try to recruit him back to the Yankees in free agency, Boone was asked the same question on WFAN.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot a lot after we met with him,\u201d Boone said. \u201cSo when we went to California to meet with them that was my big time to really make sure he understood how I felt, how we felt, my expectations and vision of him being there moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
