While Boston is still surveying the bullpen market, that position is a secondary priority for the club right now.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2025\/01\/as-tanner-scott-joins-dodgers-where-will-red-sox-turn-for-bullpen-addition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to MassLive&#8217;s Chris Cotillo<\/a>, the Red Sox&#8217;s No. 1 priority is adding a right-handed bat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>To that end, Cotillo writes that free agent Alex Bregman and trade candidate Nolan Arenado &#8220;remain the two big-name &#8212; yet imperfect &#8212; fits the Red Sox have considered.&#8221; Although Boston&#8217;s current level of interest is unclear, Cotillo adds that the team may be waiting for either player &#8220;to get desperate as Spring Training draws closer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part ad\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>The Red Sox&#8217;s estimated luxury tax payroll for the 2025 season is at about $210 million,\u00a0per FanGraphs&#8217; Roster Resource. That leaves the team about $31 million from the first\u00a0competitive balance tax threshold, seemingly giving Boston plenty of space to afford a player such as Bregman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>Arenado will count $25.55 million against the luxury tax over the next three seasons. The veteran third baseman has a no-trade clause, but Cotillo and MassLive&#8217;s Sean McAdam\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2025\/01\/red-sox-a-preferred-destination-in-nolan-arenado-trade-talks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported earlier this month<\/a>\u00a0that Boston &#8220;is a preferred destination &#8212; if not\u00a0<em>the<\/em>\u00a0preferred destination &#8212; for Arenado.&#8221; Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Saturday that he thinks trading Arenado is\u00a0&#8220;priority one, two and three&#8221;\u00a0for St. Louis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>Once the Red Sox turn their attention to the reliever market, they could consider pitchers such as Kirby Yates, Carlos Est\u00e9vez and David Robertson, among others. Cotillo reported a couple of weeks ago that\u00a0Boston has checked in on Est\u00e9vez.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p><strong>Jan. 8: Red Sox among &#8216;most likely landing spots&#8217; for Bregman (report)<\/strong><br \/>\nWhile the Blue Jays, Yankees and Mets have also been connected to free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman lately,\u00a0MLB Network insider Jon Heyman\u00a0thinks the Red Sox and Tigers are the \u201cmost likely landing spots.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>Boston has been busy on the pitching side of the ball this offseason, adding Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, Patrick Sandoval, Aroldis Chapman, Justin Wilson and Jovani Moran, but they have yet to sign a bat in free agency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>FanGraphs puts Boston\u2019s current payroll\u00a0at an estimated $172 million, presumably leaving plenty of room in its budget to fit Bregman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>If the Red Sox do end up adding Bregman, it\u2019s possible they\u2019ll use him to fill their void at second base. Signing Bregman to play third base and moving Rafael Devers to first is another possibility, potentially freeing up the club to trade first baseman Triston Casas for more pitching.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>The Red Sox also have been mentioned as a potential suitor for Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. A source told MLB.com&#8217;s John Denton that Arenado has informed the Cardinals that he is willing to approve a trade to Boston. Meanwhile,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2025\/01\/red-sox-a-preferred-destination-in-nolan-arenado-trade-talks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive.com<\/a>\u00a0have reported that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/red-sox-rumors-latest-trades-and-signings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Red Sox are &#8220;a preferred destination<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; if not the preferred destination&#8221; for the third baseman, although Boston&#8217;s level of interest in acquiring Arenado is unclear.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>The Tigers, meanwhile, already bolstered their infield with the addition of second baseman Gleyber Torres on a one-year, $15 million deal, but third base remains unsettled.\u00a0Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press\u00a0recently reported that Detroit is &#8220;all in&#8221; on Bregman to fill the void. Even after signing Torres, the Tigers&#8217; payroll\u00a0sits at just $109 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part related\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p><strong>Jan. 5: Red Sox a &#8216;preferred destination&#8217; for Arenado (report)<\/strong><br \/>\nNolan Arenado&#8217;s full no-trade clause has already reduced the chances of a deal involving the Cardinals third baseman this offseason: In December, Arenado\u00a0reportedly blocked a potential trade\u00a0to the Astros. That would leave first baseman Triston Casas as the odd man out, but according to Cotillo and McAdam, &#8220;there remains a belief in the industry that the Red Sox remain open to trading Casas, potentially for young pitching, to facilitate other roster maneuvering.&#8221; That would run counter to\u00a0chief baseball officer Craig Breslow&#8217;s comments on Dec. 30\u00a0that the team was not &#8220;shopping&#8221; Casas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p><strong>Dec. 27: What\u2019s next for Red Sox after adding Buehler?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Red Sox have made yet another pitching addition, agreeing to a\u00a0one-year, $21.05 million deal\u00a0with right-hander Walker Buehler (per a source). Boston&#8217;s deal with Buehler, which follows its\u00a0blockbuster trade\u00a0for ace lefty Garrett Crochet and its\u00a0two-year contract agreement\u00a0with Patrick Sandoval, could signal an end to the team\u2019s rotation shopping.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Styles__StoryPartContainer-sc-1mfrmm0-0 hJBugI story-part markdown\">\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 eJdqRG\">\n<p>Buehler is set to join Crochet, Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford on the club\u2019s starting staff.
