The Chicago Bears requested permission earlier this week to interview McCarthy about their head coach opening, which Dallas declined to grant.<\/p>\n<p>Time is now of the essence for both sides, as McCarthy will need time to assemble his staff in Dallas should they bring him back. The same is true for McCarthy if he lands elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2025\/01\/05\/USAT\/77475691007-usatsi-24993192.jpg?crop=4868,2738,x0,y42&amp;width=660&amp;height=371&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Will Cowboys fire Mike McCarthy? How contract impacts Dallas' decision\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Cowboys failed to make the playoffs in a season which team owner Jerry Jones said they were \u201call-in.\u201d With inconsistent play and a long list of injuries to key players, Dallas\u2019 season is over early for the first time since McCarthy\u2019s first season at the helm in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>He has since led the Cowboys to three playoff appearances and two NFC East division titles.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-jerry-jones-mike-mccarthy-meet-for-significant-time-this-week\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jerry Jones, Mike McCarthy meet for \u2018significant time\u2019 this week<\/h2>\n<p>Jones met with McCarthy for \u201csignificant time\u201d on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to\u00a0<em>ESPN<\/em>\u00a0insider Jeremy Fowler. Fellow insider\u00a0Adam Schefter\u00a0added that while McCarthy and Jones have been in communication, he doesn\u2019t get the sense that a deal is close to being worked out.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnd so this is a situation that looks like it will go down to the wire to see whether Dallas and Mike McCarthy can figure out a solution to any differences they have, or whether Mike McCarthy does become a free agent, and then does interview in Chicago and New Orleans and some of the other places that would have an interest in speaking with him,\u201d Schefter said Thursday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, this is for Jones and McCarthy to work out. But another important person in the building \u2014 quarterback\u00a0Dak Prescott\u00a0\u2014 previously advocated for McCarthy to return under a new contract.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI believe in him wholeheartedly,\u201d\u00a0Prescott told Jori Epstein of\u00a0Yahoo Sports last month. \u201cI don\u2019t want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously. But I think he definitely deserves a chance \u2014 another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. \u2018On his terms\u2019 may be a good way to say it.
