It\u2019s seemingly not a matter of if the San Francisco 49ers will give quarterback Brock Purdy an extension this offseason, but how much they will pay him.<\/p>\n

He went from the \u201cMr. Irrelevant\u201d of the 2022 draft to a strong starter late that season, and last season, he proved he was no fluke as he was at or near the top of the NFL in several statistical categories.<\/p>\n

This season, however, his numbers have been down a bit amidst a massive rash of injuries that have hit the 49ers and resulted in them holding a 6-8 record.<\/p>\n

It has led some to feel he has cost himself quite a bit of money on that extension he will be getting in just a few months.<\/p>\n

Former Niners cornerback Richard Sherman said on his podcast that the 24-year-old will still secure a big bag.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless you\u2019re willing to move on from Brock Purdy, they\u2019re gonna be paying him $50+ million,\u201d said Sherman.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Over the last two years, the narrative about Purdy has been that he\u2019s merely a game manager whose team cannot win because of him and that he has put up sizable numbers only because of the galaxy of stars the Niners have.<\/p>\n

That talk has intensified this season with all the injuries they have had.<\/p>\n

Through 13 games, No. 13 has thrown for 3,174 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 65.0 percent of his pass attempts, and his touchdown percentage is significantly down from where it was last season.<\/p>\n

However, another stat tells a different story \u2014 through his first 40 career games, Purdy ranks second in expected points added per play (EPA\/play) among all QBs since 1999.<\/p>\n

Should the #49ers pay Brock Purdy?
\nI analyzed his EPA\/play and compared it to that of other notable QBs through their first 40 games.<\/p>\n

Mahomes is an alien at #1. However, Purdy ranks 2nd in both EPA\/play and the % of negatively graded games (EPA < 0).
