The Minnesota Twins may be approaching a heartbreaking reality they never imagined possible just a few years ago.<\/p>\n
Royce Lewis \u2014 once viewed as the future face of the franchise and one of baseball\u2019s brightest young stars \u2014 is suddenly fighting to save his place in Minnesota.<\/p>\n
And after the Twins officially optioned Matt Wallner to Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday morning, many around the organization believe another message was quietly sent throughout the clubhouse:<\/p>\n
Nobody is untouchable anymore.<\/p>\n
For Lewis, that warning may have felt louder than anyone else realized.<\/p>\n
Because the former No. 1 overall pick is no longer simply struggling.<\/p>\n
He looks completely lost.<\/p>\n
After bursting onto the MLB scene with superstar potential, Lewis has fallen into one of the most difficult stretches of his professional career, hitting just .167\/.269\/.300 with three home runs and 12 RBI through his first 27 games this season.<\/p>\n
The confidence that once made him one of the most electric young players in baseball now appears shaken almost entirely.<\/p>\n
Every at-bat feels heavier.
\nEvery strikeout feels louder.
\nAnd every missed opportunity seems to increase the pressure surrounding his future in Minnesota.<\/p>\n

At the time, it felt like the beginning of something special.<\/p>\n
A new generation.<\/p>\n
A new identity.<\/p>\n
A roster finally ready to compete consistently at the highest level.<\/p>\n
Now, just a few years later, that dream appears to be collapsing faster than anyone expected.<\/p>\n
Edouard Julien was traded to the Colorado Rockies last winter.<\/p>\n
Matt Wallner has now been demoted to Triple-A after an ugly start offensively.<\/p>\n
And Royce Lewis \u2014 once considered the centerpiece of everything \u2014 may suddenly be inching dangerously close to the same cliff.<\/p>\n
Wallner\u2019s struggles were impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n
Despite possessing elite raw power and impressive bat speed, the outfielder simply could not make enough contact to survive consistently at the major league level.<\/p>\n
He entered Thursday hitting just .167\/.259\/.292 with four home runs and 10 RBI through 34 games while producing some of the worst swing-and-miss metrics in baseball.<\/p>\n
According to Baseball Savant, Wallner carried the highest strikeout rate among qualified hitters at 39.3% along with an alarming 44.0% whiff rate.<\/p>\n
In simple terms: he swung hard, but rarely connected.<\/p>\n
Eventually, the Twins ran out of patience.<\/p>\n
Now Wallner finds himself back in Triple-A potentially facing the final opportunity of his Twins career.<\/p>\n
And that reality may have terrified Royce Lewis more than anyone.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Because many of the exact same concerns are now appearing in Lewis\u2019s game.<\/p>\n
Which is stunning considering how explosive his career once looked.<\/p>\n
Between the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Lewis appeared destined for stardom, slashing .307\/.364\/.549 with 17 home runs and 57 RBI across just 70 games.<\/p>\n
He looked fearless.<\/p>\n
Dynamic.<\/p>\n
Clutch.<\/p>\n
And capable of becoming one of baseball\u2019s premier young infielders.<\/p>\n
But eventually, pitchers adjusted.<\/p>\n
And Lewis never truly adjusted back.<\/p>\n
Over his last 215 games, his production has declined significantly, hitting .227\/.386\/.402 while struggling to consistently drive the baseball the way he once did.<\/p>\n
This season, however, things have reached an even more alarming level.<\/p>\n
Outside of two home runs during the opening series against the Baltimore Orioles, Lewis has managed just one additional homer the rest of the year.<\/p>\n
Even more concerning are the underlying numbers.<\/p>\n
Like Wallner, Lewis has become increasingly vulnerable to swing-and-miss problems. Baseball Savant currently places him in the third percentile in whiff rate at 37.3% and only the 14th percentile in strikeout rate at 29.8%.<\/p>\n
Those numbers are not simply bad.<\/p>\n
They are warning signs.<\/p>\n
The type of numbers that force organizations to begin asking difficult questions about whether a struggling player needs a reset \u2014 or whether the future plans must change entirely.<\/p>\n
And deep down, Lewis knows it.<\/p>\n
Recently, the young infielder openly admitted he feels the pressure building behind him as internal competition for roster spots intensifies throughout the organization.<\/p>\n
That pressure is very real.<\/p>\n
The Twins suddenly have multiple players capable of replacing him if his struggles continue.<\/p>\n
Tristan Gray has shown flashes of stability offensively while offering defensive flexibility at third base.<\/p>\n
Ryan Kreidler also brings defensive versatility and enough offensive production to clear the low bar Lewis has unfortunately established this season.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Orlando Arcia has been absolutely crushing Triple-A pitching, entering Thursday with a dominant .324\/.377\/.577 slash line alongside eight home runs and 27 RBI.<\/p>\n
And perhaps most ominously of all, 2024 first-round pick Kaelen Culpepper continues rising rapidly through the system while many scouts believe he could push for a major league call-up before the season ends.<\/p>\n
That creates a brutally difficult reality for Royce Lewis.<\/p>\n
The Twins can no longer afford to wait forever.<\/p>\n
Not while trying to remain competitive.<\/p>\n
Not while younger players continue emerging.<\/p>\n
And not while Lewis continues searching desperately for the version of himself that once looked destined to become a franchise cornerstone.<\/p>\n
Sometimes in baseball, careers change quietly.<\/p>\n
Not through one massive announcement.<\/p>\n
Not through one shocking trade.<\/p>\n
But through subtle organizational decisions that slowly reveal the direction a franchise is heading.<\/p>\n
Matt Wallner\u2019s demotion may have been exactly that kind of moment.<\/p>\n
