But the 25-year-old shortstop\u00a0did not progress as expected\u00a0over the next two years. Volpe went through a particularly difficult period in the latter half of last season. He started the 2026 campaign on the IL after undergoing elbow surgery during the offseason.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Anthony Volpe completed his 20-day rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre in his bid to return to the New York Yankees lineup. But in a dramatic turn of events, the Yankees chose to option Volpe back to Triple-A instead. Manager Aaron Boone discussed the team\u2019s reasons for the decision with the media.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ac_118496596\" class=\"article_chunk type_50\">\n<div class=\"froala-view custom-theme first_text_block\">\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe fact is we\u2019re probably as deep as we\u2019ve ever been, and we have real competition for real spots and real roles on the team that we haven\u2019t had at some moments in time, at some portions of seasons,\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Boone said.\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cThe reality is we have a lot of really good players competing for roles.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ac_118496597\" class=\"article_chunk type_51\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"ac_118496598\" class=\"article_chunk type_50\">\n<div class=\"froala-view custom-theme\">\n<p>Volpe won a Gold Glove in 2023, finishing in the top 10 for Rookie of the Year. But he regressed at the plate last year, batting .212\/.272\/.391 with an 82 OPS+, in addition to leading the American League with 19 fielding errors.<\/p>\n<div class=\"aditude_inline_container aditude_ic_2\">\n<div id=\"aditude_article_inline_2\" class=\"aditude_div\" data-google-query-id=\"CKOFyYOLoJQDFf3XFgUdkrMwPA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/63317524\/yardbarker\/articles\/article_dynamic_2_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Jose Caballero\u2019s Performance Blocks Path for Anthony Volpe\u2019s Return<\/h2>\n<p>Jose Caballero took the spot of Anthony Volpe as the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees on Opening Day.
