BOSTON \u2014\u00a0Red Sox\u00a0catcher Carlos Narv\u00e1ez surprised manager Alex Cora when he took off to steal third base with one out in the sixth inning and Roman Anthony at the plate. Boston was trailing 3-2.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was him,\u201d Cora said.<\/p>\n

Narv\u00e1ez stole third without a throw and then scored the tying run on Anthony\u2019s RBI single to center field. The Red Sox won 8-6 over the Tigers at Fenway Park on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought he was going to take off,\u201d Cora said. \u201cI saw him hopping. I was like, \u2018Oh, shoot, maybe.\u2019 And he had a great jump. So that\u2019s awareness. That\u2019s game awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n

It marked the second stolen base of Narv\u00e1ez\u2019s big league career.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe always talks about (how) he can steal bases, especially third … just paying attention to the game, feeling the tempo,\u201d Cora said.<\/p>\n

Narv\u00e1ez made his move against Detroit left-handed reliever Brant Hurter after his one-out double.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guy was committed to go to plate,\u201d Cora said.<\/p>\n

While Narv\u00e1ez isn\u2019t known as a base stealer, he had 23 stolen bases in the minors, including nine for Yankees\u2019 Triple-A affiliate, Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre, in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cI take my chances sometimes when the pitcher is doing the same thing over and over,\u201d Narv\u00e1ez said. \u201cI was at second base the previous at-bat … He was doing the same thing for three straight pitches so I was like, OK, take my chances. Be on third base with one out and any fly ball, whatever, trying to score to tie the game. So that was the mentality.\u201d<\/p>\n

What did Hurter do over and over that Narv\u00e1ez saw?<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was mixing one look and then going to the plate,\u201d Narv\u00e1ez said. \u201cKind of like same tempo every time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Narv\u00e1ez said it all depends on the game situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re down by five or we\u2019re up by five, I don\u2019t want to put any risk,\u201d Narv\u00e1ez said. \u201cBecause that\u2019s not my game. But if … I\u2019ve got the tempo, if being on third base in that spot is huge, I\u2019m just trying to take my chances.\u201d<\/p>\n

Narv\u00e1ez contributed throughout the game, going 2 for 3 with a walk, an RBI and one run.<\/p>\n

\u201cOverall, we needed a game like this,\u201d Narv\u00e1ez said. \u201cIt was good for us, close the series like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Red Sox split their four-game series with Detroit. They welcome the Yankees to town for three games beginning Tuesday.<\/p>\n
