The\u00a0San Francisco 49ers\u00a0and Trent Williams have not been able to solve their contract stalemate, as the veteran offensive lineman\u00a0is set\u00a0to have a cap number of almost $47 million after the Niners\u00a0declined to exercise\u00a0a $10 million roster bonus.<\/p>\n

Adjusting his contract would lower that cap hit and likely add guaranteed money to a contract that currently has none,\u00a0per Pro Football Talk. However, nothing appears to be imminent on this front.<\/p>\n

Amid this concerning issue, former\u00a049ers\u00a0cornerback Richard Sherman weighed in on whether San Francisco would be willing to cut ties with Williams this offseason.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they\u2019ve gotten frustrated, not with Trent Williams, but just with the dead\u2011money situation that they\u2019ve run into year after year,\u201d Sherman said on\u00a0the March 26 edition of \u201cThe Richard Sherman Podcast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they\u2019ve been among the top dead\u2011money teams for the last few years because of Javon Hargrave\u2019s contract, Deebo Samuel, and so many other guys that they\u2019ve had to part ways with for whatever reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re trying to get away from that. I don\u2019t think they want to throw more dead money into the future. I think they\u2019re trying to take their licks now. Again, I haven\u2019t talked to John [Lynch] or Kyle [Shanahan], but I obviously don\u2019t see them getting rid of Trent Williams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Could Trent Williams Begin to Lose Leverage?<\/h2>\n

Moreover, Sherman believes that Williams has leverage in this situation with the 49ers. Nonetheless, as time passes, the veteran offensive lineman loses it, which is why the former player doesn\u2019t see either party wanting to part ways.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrent feels like he has a tremendous amount of leverage,\u201d Sherman added. \u201cObviously, the longer these negotiations go on, the less leverage I think Trent has because teams are going to spend the money. They\u2019re going to pay guys, they\u2019re going to start to plan for next year, they\u2019re going to start to think, \u2018Hey, this situation\u2019s done.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cTeams can\u2019t just create $30 million in cap space out of nowhere. Some teams can, but the contenders usually have a tight cap situation. I think this situation is going to get rectified. Obviously, it\u2019s been a bit of a distraction this offseason, but both sides want to be here. Both sides want Trent Williams in San Francisco, and that\u2019s something I believe, and I think that\u2019s what\u2019s going to ultimately happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Should the 49ers Pursue Joey Bosa to Bolster Pass Rush?<\/h2>\n

Aside from the Williams situation, there\u2019s speculation that the 49ers could be an ideal landing spot for veteran pass rusher Joey Bosa, as San Francisco could use that production from the older Bosa. However, Grant Cohn, who covers the 49ers for On SI, says that he doesn\u2019t fit the profile that defensive coordinator Raheem Morris wants.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t think the 49ers are interested in Joey Bosa,\u201c\u00a0Cohn said on March 24 on his YouTube channel. \u201cMaybe Nick is. Maybe Cheryl Bosa is interested in this, you know, teaming together. I just don\u2019t see why Raheem Morris would want it. Seems like what Raheem Morris is looking for is a very specific type of player, an outside linebacker. That is not Joey Bosa.<\/p>\n

He wants guys on the edge who can drop into coverage. That\u2019s a necessary skill; it\u2019s part of his scheme when he\u2019s calling coverages and blitzes.<\/p>\n
