<\/p>\nFOXBORO \u2014 Patriots quarterback Drake Maye already has a big fan in his newest target, wide receiver Romeo Doubs.<\/p>\n
Doubs, who officially signed his four-year contract with the Patriots on Thursday, said he\u2019s already spoken to his new quarterback.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is an amazing person to be around. I love his personality,\u201d Doubs said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously, his growth as a player on and off the field, that\u2019s really big. And I think just being able to lead the team, because ultimately, this game is team-based.\u201d<\/p>\n
The laid-back 25-year-old wide receiver also said he was attracted to the Patriots\u2019 structure, \u201cfrom the top down\u201d and said head coach Mike Vrabel was \u201creal big\u201d in his decision to come to New England over other offers, which reportedly included the Commanders.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a great opportunity I felt like I couldn\u2019t pass on,\u201d Doubs said Thursday. \u201cI know I\u2019m going to be around a great group of guys. Going to be around a great young quarterback in Drake, great coaching staff in Vrabel and Josh (McDaniels). And even just from a defensive standpoint, I know I\u2019m going to come across some great people, and I just look forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Patriots are getting a wide receiver entering his prime and coming off a career-high 724-yard season with 55 catches and six touchdowns.<\/p>\n
In four seasons since entering the NFL as a fourth-round pick out of Nevada, Doubs has 202 catches for 2,424 yards with 21 touchdowns, most of which have come inside the red zone. The best two games of Doubs\u2019 career have come at critical times, as well, with his two 100-yard performances occurring in the postseason.<\/p>\n
He impressed Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know if you guys saw him up here, like, he was already in the playbook,\u201d Wolf said. \u201cHe was on his iPad, learning the formations while I was trying to get him to sign his contract this morning. So, it was pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wolf described Doubs as having \u201ca really cool skill set.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think he can play outside, inside, he blocks, he can play Z, he can play X,\u201d Wolf said. \u201cHe\u2019s good on the short routes, he\u2019s good on the deep routes, he\u2019s good with the ball in his hands. He has a lot of route variance that we liked \u2014 strong for the ball. There\u2019s some things that he can improve upon that we\u2019ll try to help him with. But overall, just the competitor, the person.\u201d<\/p>\n Doubs described himself by saying, \u201cI just feel I can do everything really well.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI can run routes, I can catch the ball, I can block on the perimeter. And I\u2019ve participated in (special) teams over my years in Green Bay, and just outside of that, there\u2019s many other areas that I can improve in, and I look forward to that as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Doubs didn\u2019t come cheap, but out of all of the wide receivers who have signed or been traded or franchised this offseason, his $17 million APY still comes in sixth behind Alec Pierce, D.J. Moore, George Pickens, Michael Pittman and Wan\u2019dale Robinson. He signed a similar contract to Seahawks wide receiver Rashid Shaheed, who is two years older and has been less dependable and productive over their respective four-year careers.<\/p>\n Based on his contract, Doubs is currently the Patriots\u2019 top wide receiver. He was asked if he looks forward to more opportunities with his new team.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll be really honest with you, I would love to stay true to just understanding where I am and coming into a new system under our offensive coordinator,\u201d Doubs said. \u201cAnd yeah, I wouldn\u2019t really specify that I\u2019m gonna go in with this amount of targets or that amount of targets, because I\u2019ve come from a place where that didn\u2019t really mean much, and I give credit, obviously, to New England welcoming me with open arms and Green Bay just based off the history and the situation that we were in while I was there.\u201d<\/p>\n Doubs effectively replaces Stefon Diggs, who was released Wednesday, in the Patriots\u2019 wide receiver corps, though he\u2019ll likely play a different role. Doubs joins Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, DeMario Douglas, Efton Chism, John Jiles and Jeremiah Webb.<\/p>\n Wolf wouldn\u2019t rule out the possibility of still acquiring a wide receiver via trade or bringing back Diggs while speaking to the media on Thursday.<\/p>\n Diggs was more productive than Doubs in 2025, but Doubs is significantly younger, and his best football is still possibly in front of him, while Diggs was viewed as a player potentially on the decline.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" FOXBORO \u2014 Patriots quarterback Drake Maye already has a big fan in his newest target, wide receiver Romeo Doubs.
