The Pittsburgh Steelers are at a crossroads as they approach the new league year on March 11, with some tough decisions looming about their roster. One name that’s been floated around in discussions is tight end Jonnu Smith. According to insights from Thomas Valentine at Pro Football Focus, Smith might be a candidate for release as the Steelers look to free up cap space.<\/p>\n

Smith’s production last season left much to be desired. He averaged just 4.6 yards after the catch per reception in 2025, marking the lowest of his career.<\/p>\n

His overall performance earned him a 46.8 grade from PFF, ranking him 74th out of 75 tight ends. With a new head coach and offensive coordinator in place, Smith’s future with the team seems uncertain.<\/p>\n

Cutting Smith would result in $3.8 million in dead money but would free up a significant $7 million in cap savings. This move could be strategic for Pittsburgh, especially with Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington already solidifying the tight end position.<\/p>\n
