A legend with 7 Cy Young awards, more than 350 wins, more than 4,500 strikeouts, a living symbol of the modern era of baseball\u2026 but that sacred title still turned away from him.<\/p>\n

But Debbie said what hurt her husband most wasn\u2019t the closing of the door to fame, but\u2026 his fear that fans would think he\u2019d failed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe kept asking me, \u2018Are Red Sox fans disappointed in you?\u2019 And I said no \u2013 they still love you, because you gave them years they\u2019ll never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite all the ups and downs, Clemens still feels like home in Boston. The epic pitches at Fenway, the all-night games, the stadium standing up to chant his name\u2014these are memories no Hall of Fame plaque can compare to.<\/p>\n

And last night, Debbie said, he sat silently for hours, looking back at old photos, winning moments, faded posters.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018If all I leave behind is a beautiful memory for them\u2026 then it\u2019s worth it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Just hours after Debbie\u2019s post went viral, the Red Sox\u2019s social media exploded. Fans reposted legendary strikeout videos, images of him throwing a fiery ball, and breathless tributes:<\/p>\n

\u201cRoger, you\u2019ll always be a Hall of Famer in Boston.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t need votes to be a legend.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Red Sox will never forget what you\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>\n
