As the NFL offseason buzzes with speculation, one of the hot topics is whether the San Francisco 49ers will trade quarterback Mac Jones. While the team seems inclined to keep him, a tempting offer could change that narrative. But not all proposals are created equal, and one recent suggestion might be easy for the Niners to dismiss.<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s Bill Barnwell floated a trade idea sending Jones to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for J.J. McCarthy. The question is, what\u2019s in it for the Niners?<\/p>\n

McCarthy, though promising, has had a rocky start in the NFL. After being drafted by the Vikings from the University of Michigan in 2024, he impressed in the preseason but was sidelined by a knee injury, paving the way for Sam Darnold\u2019s rise. Darnold’s success led him to the Seattle Seahawks, where he recently clinched a Super Bowl victory.<\/p>\n

In 2025, McCarthy returned as Minnesota\u2019s starter, but his season was marred by injuries and inconsistency. In 10 starts, he posted a 57.6% completion rate, throwing for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.<\/p>\n

He also added 181 rushing yards and four touchdowns. While there’s potential, the 49ers aren’t in the market for another project, especially when Jones has proven to be a reliable backup.<\/p>\n

For the 49ers, any trade involving Jones should ideally bring in a draft pick to bolster their defense, add a wide receiver, or address other roster needs. Alternatively, Jones could be part of a package deal for a high-impact player like the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby.<\/p>\n

Minnesota could still be a viable destination for Jones. The Vikings found success with Darnold after his stint with the 49ers, only to watch him thrive in Seattle-a move they might regret. Bringing in Jones could be their chance to rectify that.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the 49ers should ensure they receive significant value in any trade involving Jones. His performance as a fill-in for Brock Purdy last season highlighted his importance, making it crucial for the Niners to approach any deal with strategic foresight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
