Astros Enter Spring Training with Cautious Optimism-and a Short Leash-for Lance McCullers Jr.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the Houston Astros gear up for spring training, all eyes are once again on Lance McCullers Jr.-a name that\u2019s become as synonymous with potential as it has with prolonged absence. It\u2019s been a tough road for the right-hander, whose career has been repeatedly derailed by injuries. And while no one questions the work it takes to come back from those setbacks, the reality is this: the Astros have had to learn how to win without him.<\/p>\n

Now, entering the final year of a deal that pays him $17 million, McCullers is being built up as a starter, according to manager Joe Espada. That\u2019s the plan, at least for now. But given what we\u2019ve seen over the past few seasons, it\u2019s a plan that comes with more questions than answers.<\/p>\n

McCullers\u2019 Margin for Error Is Slim<\/h3>\n

Let\u2019s be clear-there\u2019s a reason Houston is giving McCullers this shot. They\u2019re invested, both financially and emotionally, in the idea that he can still be a contributor.<\/p>\n

At his best, McCullers was a ground-ball machine with a wipeout curveball and the swagger to match. But the version we saw in his return last season was a far cry from that.<\/p>\n

The stuff wasn\u2019t the same. His fastball velocity was down.<\/p>\n

Hitters weren\u2019t chasing pitches out of the zone like they used to, and when they made contact, it was loud-too loud. Sure, he still generated ground balls, but not enough to mask the diminished sharpness in his arsenal.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s where the concern really sets in. Because if McCullers doesn\u2019t have swing-and-miss stuff anymore, and if hitters are sitting on his pitches with confidence, the margin for error becomes razor-thin.<\/p>\n

A Rotation Spot Is There-For Now<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s no harm in seeing what McCullers looks like early in camp. That\u2019s what spring training is for-testing arms, gauging progress, and seeing who might surprise you.<\/p>\n

And if McCullers shows signs of his old self, that\u2019s a win. It would give Houston the kind of rotation depth they\u2019ve been searching for all offseason.<\/p>\n

But the Astros can\u2019t afford to wait too long for that version to show up. This isn\u2019t a situation where he can be given months to figure it out.<\/p>\n

Not with the arms they have coming up behind him. Young pitchers like Ryan Weiss and Spencer Arrighetti are knocking on the door, and both have shown enough to warrant serious consideration for rotation spots.<\/p>\n

The Clock Is Ticking<\/h3>\n

This spring will be telling. If McCullers can hold up physically and show that his stuff is trending in the right direction, he could still carve out a role in this rotation. But if the same issues from last season resurface-if the velocity is down, the command is shaky, or the contact is loud-Houston has to be ready to pivot.<\/p>\n

That might mean moving him to the bullpen, where his stuff could play up in shorter bursts. Or it might mean making the tough call to move on entirely.<\/p>\n

Either way, the Astros can\u2019t afford to let sentimentality or sunk costs dictate their decision-making. Not when they\u2019ve got a roster built to contend and a pitching staff that needs every spot to be earned.<\/p>\n

McCullers has been a part of some great moments in Houston. But as spring training opens, the focus isn\u2019t on nostalgia-it\u2019s on performance. And for McCullers, the leash is short, the expectations are clear, and the time to prove he can still help this team is now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
