Two legendary 49ers running backs were in the spotlight as finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 – and while only one made it in this time, there\u2019s no bitterness between them. Roger Craig got the nod.<\/p>\n

Frank Gore didn\u2019t. And Gore?<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not just okay with it – he\u2019s genuinely happy for his fellow Niner.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d rather him get all the shine than both of us go in at the same time,\u201d Gore said, speaking with the San Jose Mercury News. That\u2019s not just humility – that\u2019s respect.<\/p>\n

Craig, a seniors nominee, faced a now-or-never scenario in terms of Hall of Fame consideration. Gore, on the other hand, is just getting started in the eligibility process.<\/p>\n

Gore\u2019s perspective is grounded in the long view. This was his first year on the ballot, and history suggests he\u2019ll have plenty of chances ahead.<\/p>\n

He knows what he accomplished, and so does the football world. \u201cOf course I want to be in.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a competitor,\u201d Gore said. \u201cBut what can I do?<\/p>\n

Everyone respects what I did. It\u2019s all good.<\/p>\n

I had two ACLs [surgically repaired in college] and was a first-ballot finalist. That\u2019s a blessing.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all good.\u201d<\/p>\n

That last point shouldn\u2019t be overlooked. Gore\u2019s path to NFL greatness wasn\u2019t smooth.<\/p>\n

Two major knee surgeries in college would\u2019ve derailed most careers before they even started. Instead, he carved out a 16-season NFL journey built on durability, consistency, and a relentless work ethic – the kind of career that earns you first-ballot finalist status.<\/p>\n

Gore and Craig are connected not just by the red and gold, but by the eras they helped define in San Francisco. Craig was a foundational piece of the 49ers dynasty in the 1980s, playing from 1983 to 1990 and becoming the first player in NFL history to post 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. Gore, who suited up for the Niners from 2005 to 2014, carried the torch through a different chapter – one that saw the franchise rise from years of mediocrity back to NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl appearance.<\/p>\n
