His combination of elite command, deception, and a plus changeup made him a stabilizing presence near the top of the rotation.<\/p>\n That reputation took a hit in 2025.<\/p>\n Ober posted career-worst numbers across the board, finishing with a 5.10 ERA and 4.90 FIP<\/strong> over 146 1\/3 innings. While still capable of missing bats, his overall effectiveness slipped, and his margin for error shrank noticeably. The most alarming indicator was a drop in fastball velocity<\/strong>, with his four-seamer averaging just 90.3 mph<\/strong>, down from 91.7 mph during his breakout 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n Velocity wasn\u2019t the only issue. If healthy, he could regain his previous form and reassert himself as Minnesota\u2019s clear No. 3 starter behind L\u00f3pez and Ryan.<\/p>\n But the risk is no longer theoretical.<\/p>\n If Ober opens 2026 with diminished velocity and inconsistent results while Woods Richardson continues to build on his late-season breakout, the Twins may be forced to reconsider their internal hierarchy. What once seemed unthinkable\u2014Woods Richardson leapfrogging Ober\u2014now feels plausible.<\/p>\n Minnesota\u2019s rotation success in 2026 will ultimately depend on L\u00f3pez and Ryan performing at or above their established standards. Still, the battle between Ober and Woods Richardson could quietly shape the ceiling of the entire staff.<\/p>\n If Woods Richardson cements himself as a legitimate frontline arm and one or more of the Twins\u2019 young challengers force their way into the rotation, Ober\u2019s role may no longer be guaranteed<\/strong>. For now, the Twins have the luxury of depth.
