The San Francisco Giants aren\u2019t just tweaking around the edges this offseason-they\u2019re going for it. With most of the roster puzzle already in place, the front office has zeroed in on one final piece: second base.<\/p>\n

And their top target? Nico Hoerner of the Chicago Cubs.<\/p>\n

According to ESPN\u2019s Jeff Passan, the Giants are in deep talks with both the Cubs and Cardinals as they look to land a high-impact middle infielder, with Hoerner and Brendan Donovan firmly in their sights. But it\u2019s Hoerner who stands out as the centerpiece of San Francisco\u2019s pursuit. The fit makes sense on just about every level-defensively, offensively, and even geographically.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with the glove. Hoerner is one of the best defensive second basemen in the game, full stop.<\/p>\n

Over his career, he\u2019s racked up 43 Defensive Runs Saved and 51 Outs Above Average. That\u2019s elite territory, and it\u2019s exactly the kind of profile Buster Posey has prioritized since stepping into the front office in 2024.<\/p>\n

Posey\u2019s vision has been clear from the jump: build around defense up the middle and stabilize the pitching staff. Hoerner checks both boxes by anchoring the infield and reducing the load on the arms behind him.<\/p>\n
