In his first public comments in nearly four years, Jared Porter acknowledged sending the inappropriate messages that cost him his job as Mets general manager, said he holds no ill will toward the team and painted a picture of a changed man.<\/p>\n

Porter had been hired as the GM in December 2020 and lasted in the role for 37 days.<\/p>\n

In January 2021, ESPN reported he had sent lewd text messages \u2014 as well as a string of 62 unanswered texts \u2014 to a female journalist in 2016.<\/p>\n

Mets owner Steve Cohen and then-president Sandy Alderson fired Porter, who had not spoken publicly since.<\/p>\n

\u201cI put myself in that situation,\u201d Porter said on the \u201cBaseball Isn\u2019t Boring\u201d podcast episode that was released Friday. \u201cI made the decision to send the text messages that I sent, and I certainly shouldn\u2019t have done it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Porter called his relationship with the reporter \u201cnot appropriate\u201d for \u201ca lot of reasons.\u201d He was Cubs director of professional scouting when he met the reporter \u2014 a foreign correspondent who had moved to the United States to cover Major League Baseball and who asked ESPN to remain anonymous \u2014 and sent her repeated messages, long after she stopped responding, that culminated with an erect penis.<\/p>\n

The woman, who had a limited grasp on English, according to ESPN, eventually sought help in crafting a response that asked him to stop, to which he complied and apologized.<\/p>\n

The woman left journalism and returned to her home country. Porter rose through the industry, becoming an assistant general manager with the Diamondbacks before getting poached by the Mets, who were in the early days of the Cohen ownership.<\/p>\n

Cohen announced the firing less than 12 hours after the ESPN story was published.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey had to make the best decision for the New York Mets when that article came out, and I knew they would,\u201d Porter said. \u201cI hold zero ill will towards them whatsoever. I do think they made the best decision for the Mets. It\u2019s unfortunate that I put myself and put them in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

After he was fired, Porter said he went to an inpatient mental health institute in Arizona for \u201cabout a week.\u201d He cited a lack of boundaries and \u201chuge emotional walls\u201d that required professional mental help. A pressure-filled job and behavioral addictions \u2014 including an addiction to \u201cseeking approval from other people,\u201d he said \u2014 led to his decisions and professional demise.<\/p>\n
