Despite having a failed stint as the\u00a0New York Jets\u2018 head coach on his resume, Saleh drew quite a bit of interest across the league last offseason. Reports have emerged indicating he received a very lucrative offer from the\u00a0Las Vegas Raiders\u00a0that he turned down in order to return to San Fran, which Shanahan opted to recently address.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ub-banner2\" class=\"adsconex-banner\" data-ad-placement=\"banner2\"><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Kyle Shanahan Discusses Latest Robert Saleh Report<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Kyle Shanahan on Robert Saleh turning down the Raiders DC job:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had many opportunities. That was one of them. He got close to a couple of head coaching jobs too. He was our first choice, and so was his. Glad he stuck to his word. We would have had beef. I hope for us he\u2019s not<\/p>\n<div id=\"qctaboo-mid\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>6:00 pm \u00b7 12 Dec 2025<\/p>\n<p><strong>1865<\/strong><strong>Reply<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saleh initially put himself on the radar of teams across the\u00a0NFL\u00a0as a potential head coach candidate when he was San Francisco\u2019s defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020. That landed him his gig with the Jets, and while things didn\u2019t work out for him there, he still was viewed as one of the top defensive minds in the league.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ub-banner3\" class=\"adsconex-banner\" data-ad-placement=\"banner3\"><\/div>\n<p>After spending time with the\u00a0G<a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/green-bay-packers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">r<\/a>een Bay Packers\u00a0as an offensive consultant in the wake of his firing from the Jets early in the 2024 campaign, Saleh generated quite a bit of interest as a potential head coach or defensive coordinator. As we know now, he opted to return to Shanahan\u2019s staff, and he\u2019s expected to be a top candidate for several head coach vacancies this upcoming offseason.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ub-banner4\" class=\"adsconex-banner\" data-ad-placement=\"banner4\"><\/div>\n<p>Reports have indicated, though, that Saleh may have passed up bigger offers in order to return to the 49ers. The Raiders were one team that was in on Saleh, and they offered him their defensive coordinator position, which would eventually lead to him becoming their head coach. He turned it down, though, and when discussing the report, Shanahan made it clear how happy he was to\u00a0welcome his old friend back to town.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ub-banner5\" class=\"adsconex-banner\" data-ad-placement=\"banner5\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think Robert had a lot of opportunities to be a d-coordinator, that was definitely one of them,\u201d Shanahan said when speaking to reporters. \u201cHe got close to a couple of head coaching jobs in that time, too.
