BCB After Dark<\/em> is the place for you to talk baseball, music, movies, or anything else you need to get off your chest, as long as it is within the rules of the site. The late-nighters are encouraged to get the party started, but everyone else is invited to join in as you wake up the next morning and into the afternoon.<\/p>\n

Last night, I asked you which recently non-tendered closer would you most like the Cubs to sign. I guess you weren\u2019t too excited, since \u201cNone of them\u201d ran away with the vote with 35 percent. Another 25 percent said the Cubs should sign Jordan Romano and 22 percent picked Kyle Finnegan. Jos\u00e9 Leclerc got 18 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday night\/Wednesday morning, I don\u2019t normally do any movie stuff. But I will remind you that the BCB Winter Hitchcock Classic<\/em> will start soon\u2014either tomorrow or Monday. But I always have time for jazz, so those of you who skip that can do so now. You won\u2019t hurt my feelings.<\/p>\n

To get you started with the Christmas jazz, I\u2019m going to start you out easy with a live performance of \u201cMy Favorite Things\u201d by saxophonist John Coltrane in Belgium in 1965. Heck, \u201cMy Favorite Things\u201d wasn\u2019t even considered a Christmas song in 1965. McCoy Tyner is on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums.<\/p>\n

Yusei Kikuchi to the Angels. $63M, 3 years. Angels are back in the ballgame: about $100M spent (Soler\/d\u2019Arnaud\/Hendricks\/Newman) early MLB spending lead. Kikuchi\u2019s $21M salary could boost pitching comps: Manaea also Severino, Flaherty, Eovaldi, Pivetta & Buehler (Snell, Burnes & Fried will be more)<\/p>\n

Kikuchi was someone we discussed around here as a possible Cubs signing and I estimated that Kikuchi would get a deal of around three years and $56 million. That\u2019s reasonably close to what he got, but I was low by $7 million. In any case, 44 percent of you were \u201cmeh\u201d on Kikuchi two weeks ago.<\/p>\n

So tonight I\u2019m just going to ask you \u201cShould the Cubs have beaten the Angels offer?\u201d Now you can say \u201cNo, Kikuchi isn\u2019t worth that\u201d but the Cubs seem determined to add a starter this winter and as Heyman writes, Kikuchi\u2019s three-year, $63 million deal is setting the market. If you don\u2019t overpay for a free agent, you don\u2019t get any free agents. That\u2019s called the \u201cwinner\u2019s curse.\u201d<\/p>\n

While we don\u2019t know for sure, Kikuchi is considered to be in the same free agent bucket as Nathan Eovaldi. Jack Flaherty might get a little more and Walker Buehler a lot less (at least in terms of years) because of his injury issues. Sean Manaea will probably get about the same, but only because his market is depressed by a qualifying offer. Nick Pivetta and Luis Severino would likely cost less, but only because they have qualifying offers attached. It doesn\u2019t sound like the Cubs want to sacrifice their second- and fifth-round picks to sign someone with a QO.<\/p>\n

So should the Cubs have gone harder after Kikuchi, with the understanding that many of the other free agent pitchers either have qualifying offers or injury issues? Should they have beaten the Angels offer.<\/p>\n
